Inner trailer tire sidewall blowout

Tires do the darndest things, eh? Maybe whilst rolling it was kept cool, and stopping the heat made it go? With the rail cans, I've had lots of blowouts, always the inside for some unexplained reason, I don't ever recall one blowing out while sitting still.

 

After it is removed look inside and see if it has had a previous repair. I’ve lost a handful of Michelins over the years because of this. 3 of them just blew out sitting still. 2 while parked in my shop. 1 actually bent the garage door behind were the truck was parked when it ruptured the cap. All had previous repairs or impact damage from something while in use. One had a torn bead from being dismounted and remounted on a different wheel. A torn bead allows air to migrate into sidewall plies and causes them to separate.

the latest one I lost was in Sept. Inside Left front drive blew out on me while accelerating from a dead stop at a traffic light on a 50 mph road. Was probably around 40-45 when it did so no damage to the truck. Just scratch my quarter fender with the shredded steel cord. When I removed it I was reminded I personally repaired it back in 2016. It ruptured right thru the Michelin approved RMA drill and fill repair.

 

What happens to cause a tire to blow out while sitting is it just finally fatigues at a spot in the plies were air and or moisture has migrated in and has caused them to separate. It got to the point it can’t hold back the psi anymore and lets go. Previous road hazard impacts, debris/rocks getting stuck between duals, potholes, curbing, repairs, mounting damage, run low on air pressure before a repair, or sitting in direct hot summer sun, can all have a role in it. Like I said I’ve lost a few just sitting like yours was.
That is the bad thing about all steel radials they are hand granades waiting to go off. I have seen it many times and do not stand to close to them when I check air or set normal maintenance pressures. Use a long hose with clip on chuck so you can stand away from them with the inflator.

this last summer i had a mounted steer leaning against a tree outside that i had taken off a salvage truck a few days before. I’m at work and My wife was inside the house and heard it explode. She knows the sound because shes been around this stuff as long as me so she goes out to the shop thinking it’s one of the trucks in there. Found nothing but when she walks back across the yard to house she sees the old alcoa with blown out tire laying about 10’ away from the tree. Lol.

How old is/was the casing ?

 

Will have to see if @gentleroger has access to trhe tire to look up the number. The one in my pic was a 11r24.5 LRH 16 ply made 0416 at the B9 plant which is Lexington Ky. Tire was probably 6 months old when I repaired it. That truck gets maybe 200 miles a week on it.

 

I have my test truck that was curbed by the second to last driver using it, there was a huge bulge when we went to move it. the mechanic deflated it and replaced it. Took it to the tire shop and they said the envelope that holds the air in, separated from the outer casing and split causing the outer to bulge.

I had a set of new tires (Michelin's) on my beater truck, one morning I heard hissing and looked around the car I was going to use, nothing but when I turned the corner of the truck, I saw something like this - not the actual tire but just like it. Michelin said it was a defect, I got a new tire but that was it, I should have gotten another set plus a new tire.
