Is it the same thing as marine VHF radio or do you need another type to hear trucker VHF? I heard that VHF has a really long range because there are repeater towers all over the place.

a vhf and marine vhf are the same thing! in the US it is illegal to use one in your car. there are different settings for canada/us/international freq on the vhf. even if you were allowed to use a vhf radio in your car/truck/semi whatever there are only 6 channels you can operate on in the us 68,69,70,71,72,78 and 16 is for hailing other boats, coast guard, marina patrol, vessel assist, and then switching to another channel
take it from a guy who is trained in boating skills and seamanship from the Coast Guard
unless i happen to be wrong, which i doubt
someone that has a vhf in the us please pm me with the first 10 channel #'s -
I researched it more by reading in another section of this forum about HAM radio, and I think that 2M radio is the one that has repeater towers and people on land are allowed to use it. Does anyone know if 2M radio is good to use in a truck or car on the road?

Im not an expert in ham but i do believe with that radio you need a license to operate it.

There is a new one out in the last few years called MURS that covers all of the bands from 146-174 MHz. In Canada it is completely legal to have and use.
