When I got that last oil change they charged me about $200 to regrease/oil one of my tandems. They said it had water in it. Not sure how that happened or even how it would only be one of them. But, I guess it had to be done.

it probably didn't have water in it. they are idiots. Water in the lube will make it milky looking but so will mixing synthetic and non synthetic lube, which is likely what happened when the place you bought your truck from topped off the fluids.
either way it needed to be drained and refilled BUT! and it's a big BUTT!
a single box fluid change should be $100 for synthetic fluid or about $65 for regular..... NOT $200
at least that's what my local petro charges -
I was charged $34.28 per gallon at 4 gallons for transmission grease, total $137.12 plus whatever the labor was. A lot was done so it's hard to quantify what else went to that. I saw part of what came out on the ground. It was like a rust color thin fluid.

sounds like a dealership

When Pharm got that done I thought it was strange that they only wanted to change one rearend. I bet you are exactly right. I bet some one added synthetic and made it look a funny color. But, If I had been in Pharms situation and they tell me I have what looks like water in the rearend I would have sucked it up and had it changed.
PharmPhail Thanks this. -
Vindicated!

no, I said it needed to be done. Once you mix them and it gets milky it starts to loose it's lubrication ability..
I just think they charged him too much for it -
Unfortunately many of the shops out on the road make us pay the because-we-are-your-only-option tax.
Brickman and PharmPhail Thank this. -
I think the place Pharm went to have been fairly reasonable. They have done most of the work on his truck since he has had it. The rearend seemed high but I think Pharm had a hard time figuring out the exact labor charged. He had a lot done that day. Bumper streightened, hood latch, lights fixed, oil change, rearend grease changed.
I know it was expensive but what I hear from Pharm he trust them and I get the filling they are trying to do him a good job. I know they worked over the weekend on his clutch to get him to a load on Monday.PharmPhail Thanks this. -
Yes I trust them. I know going in they're not the cheapest but they are very thorough and head off a lot of problems for me. Once I went to a place near there that was $20 an hour cheaper, and they hit me for a 4 hour minimum putting in the inverter. Expensive mistake and one I won't make again. I've gone there with something small before and they've waived me off rather than charging. Overall it's been good.
