Well, there's no real simple answer on that one. I can tell ya' I lost two construction companies last year because one person and his lawyer screwed me out of a sh*tload of money and left me holding the bag. I've spent nearly a year paying up every dime I committed to pay based on getting paid what I didn't get. It's been a TOUGH road I can tell you. But, it wasn't big company or credit card stuff. It was people in my town and suppliers in my area. There are two bonuses to me: One: When I see these people at home, not a single one of them can look at me and say they didn't get paid. Two: When I need something, they are there and at the ready because in their eyes, I did the right thing.
I'm not saying I should've or even would again handle it the same way, nor am I saying it's for everyone. It's been a ###### tough road, and I'm glad the end is in sight. Point is, if you even "think" there might be a chance you'll not be able to pay up, you're setting yourself up, and potentially other people up, for a hard fall. Setting yourself up is one thing. Placing others in jeopardy is another matter entirely.Donk, panhandlepat, PharmPhail and 2 others Thank this. -
when I lot my paving company I owed roughly $60k on creidit cards, about $70k on vehicles, $30k on my loader. Not to mention $200k on my house.
Everyone told me to do bankruptcy but I didn't. I sold everything I had, tools, my car and jeep collection paid off the equipment loans and vehicles, spent three year paying on those credit cards and go them down to where I only owe about $15k now but I now haven't paid on them in a year.
It sucks that I spent three years making huge sacrifices in our lives to pay that crap only to turn around and still be facing bankruptcy 4 years later. I probaby should have done it then but I was trying to to the "right" thing. These days my view is that the banks and go copulate with themselvesM.Enterprises, luvtheroad, 7mouths2feed and 3 others Thank this. -

Medicine Man, I know where you're coming from. I had debt from a business also. I paid everything and everyone that I owed money to. I could have filed bancruptcy, but chose not to. Did the "right" thing. You would think that there would be something good that would come of doing the "right" thing, but there isn't. Your credit is ruined, probably forever. I know people who've walked away from homes, have not even tried to work with banks and credit card lendors. They file. Lo and behold, they have all the credit in the world. What's wrong with this picture? Is being moral and ethical wrong now?

OK, getting off the soapbox now...M.Enterprises Thanks this. -
