Anyone know if there is any money in this kind of trucking? Maybe better than general OTR? I know they pay by weight instead of miles. Just wondering if anyone had an opinion.

Hey Boxcar, the lot will lease me one of those for $500 a month which I'm considering because if I don't like it or can't make it work I'm not on the hook for it, can just turn it back in. But I'm wondering why you're selling yours? What happened to the market around you? Did you work through Eclipse or S&S?

IMO, I'd stay away from Volvos. The 2004 VN670 I drove gave me nothing but problems. It was the quietest and smoothest riding truck I've ever driven, but the electrical problems I had with that beast wasn't near enough to compensate for the smooth ride.

    MY OPINION....

This is the worst paying out there. The worst of the worst is hauling grain, corn etc,etc...Being payed by the ''bushal'' is very bad right now..

Then comes rock, dirt, clay etc,etc...PAID BY TON....SUCKS BAD NOW

Then come general van freight.. PAID BY MILE OR %....SUCKS BAD

As it sits now, nothing is paying because everyone is ''scabbing'' the little bit of work that is out there...

    A@E has always paid 4-5.00 a mile..Now its being hauled for 1.40...lmfao
CARS were the best also at one time...they are pulling that dirt cheap..

THERE IS NO MONEY IN TRUCKING...

ITS NOT WORTH IT RIGHT NOW..

Thanks, that's the kind of advice I can use. If I could play devil's advocate for a moment though, wouldn't electrical problems be fairly evident early on? I mean, if it's a '99 wouldn't that have already been sorted out? This one also has a new/different engine as well, and is the lowest miles of all of 'em. Plus, isn't it more likely you got a bad one? There's an aweful lot of them out there. But I guess that's true of all the trucks.

You know what they say, You can always tell a trucker, but you can't tell him MUCH!

I've often questioned that I had a bad one, until I've met other guys who had problems with them. Like I said, it's just my opinion. Volvo has left a bad taste in my mouth. I do like the VN770's sleeper set up. That table would be pretty handy. However, I'll never drive one again so long as I have a choice in the matter.

As far as the problems being evident early on, you might be right. However, the problems I had were not the same ones repeatedly. One day it was the ground wire on the starter corroding in two (at just under 60k miles), the next it would be lights going haywire. The final problem I had with that truck was engine trouble, which I never figured out what that problem was since they pulled me out of that truck and into another one.

I was driving for PAM at the time. They bought a bunch of Volvos in '03 and '04, but in '05 they finally stopped buying them because of all the problems they were having with them fleet wide.

I think that KW is nice. Much more room and a good price. What is the mileage and maintenance history? Figure it this way, at a good price, and with more room than the Shaker (not sure about the Volvo, never been in one), you might like it better, because lets face it, you are going to be living in that thing more than you will be home in THIS economy. Slave to the truck.

    :biggrin_25525:

P.S.: I have come to personally hate Columbias. Junk. I'd rather drive a Century, even though they arent much different. If money were no object, I'd love to ride a Cascadia for van or reefer, and a Pete for Flatbedding. But...... we all have dreams, right?
