I have been reading watching your threads, more power to you for you ambition and getting started in the business!
I attempting to do the same thing, I agree with you on the point of getting experience, it's hard to get hired unless you want be away for 10-14 days. With a family it's harder.
I got hired with a small company part time to get experience I soon learned to make $,
$ has to invested in the truck, insurance, computers and software, etc. If you have the $ to invest and the banked dollars.
I have managed/owned business's in the past also.
Getting the insurance was not a problem,a little expensive but not that much more.
Everything else to obtain was similar to obtain as compared to s/u of other business's.
Lots of time, phone calls, more return phone call's, more phone call's( my cell provider is the one making $ here) /emails,registrations,etc..
I'm a new driver, O/O, so yes I have lot's and lot's to learn about this business.
I would appreciate it if you contact me, fill me in on your shortcoming's and success's.
Happy new year. -

My first advise is to make sure you get on a good anti depressant. I am on one called Pristiq and it works great.
My husband got his CDL and worked for as a dump truck driver for 3 years so he did not have any over the road experience. We bought a used truck and 53 ft dry van w/ swing doors. We got his authority and I started finding him loads.
The three things you will need when you go on the load board is a W9. copy of your MC Authority and proof of insurance. From there you call brokers and negotiate a rate.
I have a sales background so we have been able to average around $1.30 a mile round trip...Usually I will get 1.50 to 1.80 going East and around 1.00 to 1.20 going West. But I will be searching for the backhaul loads while my husband is on the road and if he is in Florida, Utah or Texas, it may take me a couple days of calling around and clicking back and forth on the load boards until I find something.
I also am set up with large brokers, like CH Robinson, Bear, TQL, etc that have more loads in harder to find areas.
Because we do not have contacts with shippers, we are barely squeaking by.
IFTA taxes run us around $300 a quarter because of New Mexico's heavy highway tax and we pay extra for mapping since my husband does not like to make a note everytime he crosses a state line.
Our truck has really held up well, but our trailer has cost us thousands in repairs and that is the one "fatal" mistake we made.
unless you have a 10K cushion, you should get set up with a factoring company. I like Freight Capital, they will run credit checks so you do not get screwed. One other caution is that a lot of the brokers on the board require that you have at least 6 months experience before they will use you. Good Luck, Laurie.Braazooka Thanks this. -
By the way Gears thanks for your response on my thread, i'm about to send you one e-mail, that i will do soon. Thanks a lot.
