Happy New Year friends!!
I've heard from other drivers in the biz that there are a few shippers out there that won't do business with a Motor Carrier that's been in business less than 6 months. And then there's some that won't ship with you unless you have a high enough safety rating. As far as I know, it's not a question of experience on the driver, it's the stability of the carrier they're concerned about.Braazooka Thanks this. -
I have used so may brokers that it is hard for me to remember which ones require more time. And by more time, I mean the length of time that you have had your authority. I would say about 20-25% of brokers request at least 6 months, but there are hundreds of brokers out there, so I would not stress about it too much.
I would like to add that it is important that you always try to get more than the broker offers. If more o/o's play hard ball, it will keep everyone's rate higher. ALWAYS ask for a 5% fuel surcharge, ALWAYS remind the broker that diesel is close to $3 a gallon, Unless you are trying to get out of Florida, or trying to get to CA or AZ, NEVER take a load for less than a dollar a mile. When you take less, you hurt all of us. Try to avoid using Sneider and Bear at all costs, they bid the lowest for rates, and put the o/o's in the poor house. Ch Robinson, is hit or miss, but they pay fast and only charge 1.5% for quick pay, plus the brokers will often times throw in an extra $100 into the rate if you ask nicely. NEVER let the brokers know that you are the driver. Always tell them that you will dispatch the driver, and a great way to negotiate a rate is to say that you will "check with the driver". -Lauriedairyman, Baack, Big John and 1 other person Thank this. -
Hey! Your talking to someone has done it! you can do it, but you better know what you are doing, it is a hassle trying to find insurance, then being able to rent a trailer, but it can be done, I done it. if you need insurance there is a company called St. George they can help. you just have to have a load of cash to do it. you will need about 1,400 for you authority, and plates about 600 a month for insurance, Truck payment if you buy a 30,000 truck you might be able to keep your payments at around 600 a month on the truck. Trailer will cost about 400 a month plus, so many cents a mile for repair or maintance.

Did Rob fall off the face of the earth or what.......he hasn't been on here for an update in a while now.

I see your all back to talking to yourselves. lmao

Rob didn't fall off the earth, he bounced me an email the other night. Said he was down in Florida, and would be rolling back towards home soon. Other than that, he has been kinda quiet, and I don't know what to make of that - but I hope he's okay.
