Hey PP, I'm looking on line at some Hopper Bottoms. What is the spec on your trailer. Lengh, height, and width etc., etc
-
43' x 96" x 78"
I THINK that's the one I have. I rented it right off the lot and never saw actual specs or measured it.
I'll say though that I've never seen it near full yet at 80k. I think 40' is probably the minimum for eclipse though. Wallygator could tell you for sure since he just spoke with them about requirements. The one I'm pulling was already run through them so I didn't have to worry about it. -
Thanks, I think this may be the way to go, esp. they way freight are right now. I've seen some rentals online for about 1000/mth. I guess that's resonable. -
PP, you have no idea how many you've inspired. Even myself. I'm actually considering trying to get something like this together when I get home. Probably wont be buying a truck, but I could figure something out. I knew full well you'd figure out a way to make this work. As long as your covering your bills, truck payments and fees, fuel, repairs, etc, as well as feeding yourself, your going to make it, because you are only going to get better at what you are doing.
If you need a parking solution at home, I may have something available in Mint Hill. Shoot me a PM or email and I'll see what I can do.
BTW: I've parked at that truck stop down on 74 near Monroe for three days with no issues, so thats also another free parking option for you and closer to home.PharmPhail Thanks this. -
Hey Phil. Just got caught up on your thread. Glad things are going well. You definitely give the rest of us hope.
Thanks and keep those wheels turning.PharmPhail Thanks this. -

I just wanted to thank everyone for the kind words and the support again.
I've been reading the comments about inspiring a lot of you and have not really known what to say. It is a huge weight on my mind and there's a couple of things I would like to say about it and point out. No matter what, you will always get the truth from me, the good, the bad, the indifferent and you can rely on every word here.
What I would like to keep pointing to though is the very real expense that has gone into getting this going. I know there are lots of you who have the same courage, and are encouraged by someone who can go out there without training and make it work, and this is true.
What worries me is that some will try to duplicate this by cutting some other very important corners. Compromises such as getting a much older truck, or getting a truck but not being able to insure or tag it and then looking to one of the lease (no credit check) companies that take advantage, or borrowing from a family member or otherwise not having enough money left over after startup to handle emergencies. ALL of this has proven to be very necessary, and all these guys on here that warn of failure are NOT wrong. There is nothing that I am doing that flies in the face of all the wisdom on this website. However, I was truly in a financial position that was somewhat unique to many of the people who come here asking for O/O advice, and 9 times or more out of 10 the naysayers are going to be right. It would be irresponsible for them to say otherwise!
Second, we still don't know for sure how this works out for me! I've only been out there for 2 weeks and so far it just LOOKS good, I can't stress this enough.
Again, I don't doubt that many of you are every bit the same as me, but if you don't have what I had, it just won't matter. This business will steamroll over you and not apologize afterward. We're talking 1% inspiration, 2% perspiration, and 98% liquification! I've also cut it REALLY close to my own resources and borrowed beyond that.
So please take to heart that if you end up with an older truck, or you have payments twice mine, or you are leased on instead of having your authority, or if you try to compete with the dry, reefers, and flats, that your business will have substantial differences than mine which will translate into substantially more hardship. If you can't walk into a deal with all of your own, reliable stuff, then the businesses and people you use to make up the difference, well you'll be into them for good.
That said, I really do love to inspire, please use the information here wisely. I really don't want to ruin anyone's life! The Challenger, TX_Proud, Scarecrow03 and 11 others Thank this. -
Pharm, that was a very good post and kudos to you for saying it. As I read some of the posts that you were referencing in the post you just made, I was wanting to say the same thing you just did.
Shoot man, part of me still thinks that you might have bitten off more than you can chew. However, don't hesitate to prove me wrong. I think I've explained enough (or at least tried to) how much I would never even have thought of trying what you're doing right out of the gate. I've had at least three friends that tried to be O/O's after spending 3-6 months in a company truck after school and all of them failed. One of those guys used to drive a truck back in the 70s and 80s. His downfall was getting injured by a case of frozen beef that fell out of the truck as he was opening the doors. It messed up some nerves in his neck and since he didn't have any medical insurance he lost everything he had.
PharmPhail, TX_Proud and Wickked Thank this. -
I do hear what your saying and understand that it is a huge risk.
I am in somewhat of a unique situation. I am recently single, no kids, no family to speak of. I have someone that is ready to rent my house (furnished) which I only have a few years left on the mortgage anyways.
I have always been careful with my money and have enough in my current business account (general contractor) to pay cash for a very good truck(<200K miles), trailer, one year's worth of insurance, all permits and taxes, and still have enough for an emergency fund.
I also have additional savings which I could live on for over a year.
Construction around here has gone to sh%$! And besides, I was getting burned out on it anyways. It's all I have ever done and just was getting to the point I hated getting up every morning.
Trucking is something I have always been interested in, but couldn't see being gone so much when I was married. Now there is nothing stopping me except....... I have a 20+ year old DUI, and a two year old reckless driving (don't ask - I was in the middle of my divorce after a 27 year relationship, not a good time) which I am in the process of getting sealed (hopefully).
With those hits on my record, even the worst companies won't hire me as a company driver. I would much prefer to go the Co. driver route, but I don't think I have that option.
I'm not an idiot, I did graduate from UF with honors. I have run a business successfully. I do realize now is not the best time to get into trucking, but it is still something I really want to do.
So, with that said, I'll keep doing research while waiting to see what can be done about the reckless.
Keep posting PP, this is one of the best threads I've run across on any of the forums! ("finally an O/O" started out great but is now just a social network)
