We've got a fresh blanket of snow up here just for you!! It may be gone by the time you come through. :biggrin_25510:

Did you bring your auger and fishing pole? There's only a few more months until the ice is off of the lakes! The 'great white hope' would look pretty good in the middle of the lake with a fishing pole sticking out the passenger side (don't fish out of the driver's side, cuz then your 'on duty'). :biggrin_25525:

Glad to hear you are getting loads!!

I am going with skateboard work to start, I am a physical work type of guy, I like a challenge. Hopefully I will be able to stick with it. The key is going to be keeping the deadhead miles down to a minimum. I am in the SF/bay area so I am kinda of in the middle of the traffic lanes going north and south. I am renting a flatbed to start, if it works out then I will buy one. I really do not want to do van work cause my freightliner is a flat-top with no fairings on the roof. Running vans would likely make my MPG go to crap.
I was gonna try refer, but the rental is about 1400 total (they charge for hours used + per mile), some places have a flat rate which is higher, but there is no per mile or hours used charge. A lot of the refer loads require teams for the east coast runs (make sense cause of the perishable nature of the loads).

Overall its still up in the air as to what I will be doing. Flatbed is my goal,i just spent about 800 on equipment and I still have to buy tarps! I am avoiding that till fall (it never rains in CA in the summer) when I have some cash built up.

The loads payouts out here are pretty extreme, i have seen them from $1 a mile to $2 a mile when posted on the load boards. Just working off the load boards I can make a living. Just have to get the loads paying closer to $2 a mile! A few were even less, I bet you could get more out of them if you wait to the last minute, cause they need to get it covered.

The bottom line is who knows what the future will bring! A year ago I was in my 2nd year of law school, I got laid off in Oct 08, and could not get financing for the 3rd year cause I haven't been paying my bills (when you go from $1000 week to $450 week priorities change) so my credit went to poop. The law school requires a certain time limit to graduate, and cause I cannot attend this year, I will not make the time limit for graduation. Sooo.. now law school is out and trucking is back in.

My motto: in life is its better to try and fail, then to never try at all.

So if I fail at this i will move on the next adventure!

    Keep us informed wallygator!

Sounds like you already pay all your own repairs... authority is only another $300!

that was my first choice too. I couldnt' figure out how to make it work. Jarhead said he's willing to train me on it but he's in Okinawa lol. Did you get any training in tarping/securing? That's one I wouldn't do without knowing some firm rules and getting some practice. There's nothing but gravity holding that stuff on there except for whatever you do to it.

I will be following your success. I'm still interested in flats. When the market is good, they're supposed to do a little better than reefs and drys. I think you could be in good position during the recovery, and things seem to be picking up a little bit.

Ok, well I can't put this off any longer.. I'm fueled and about to go hit chicago. It's pouring and my side-views are useless except for headlights.

Jason skateboarding is a good place to start.thats what i first did.a buddy of mine just outfitted 2 trucks for flat bed and bought his tarps from a place called tri county tarps and got a good deal.as for me im allready setup with eclipse pulling endump.so i guess pharm phil and i will be working the same lanes.MM i feel for ya man.my truck is 14 yrs old with a rebuilt motor and such and a lot of companys would balk at the age.don't give up youll find somewhere good to pull for..i think the reason most of these guys don't lease another truck on is it's hard enough on your own let alone having another truck to worry about..i thought you had a gig driving someone elses truck? guess it diden't work out.good luck what ever you do.
p.s. are you going to call Exxact.there not the greatest but a good start just the same. Walt
