Insurance: dirt cheap cause of your experiecne
    Plates- 2000-2500
Ifta- 14.00 for the sticker, any company you lease with will make you pay the taxes due anyway.
trailer- 400-600 month, flat or van, refer is 1300-1500 month.

    For DOT application:

Your insurance company will file the 2 docs you need for the insurance requirements. If you are already a member of OOIDA, they will give you your blanket service of process (BOC-3) for free. They will also assist you in getting your authority as well. They also have a drug testing program that is required by the dot. The FMCSA also has a document that tells you how to keep records for safety, hiring drivers, etc. I basically treated myself as a company employee and keep all the proper required documents in my file cabinet. I also have a packets I created for hiring a new driver, safety protocols, etc. I even took a drug test and have in my employee files (just me!!).

Here is the link for the safety booklet: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/safety-security/eta/index.htm

If you do file it, with in seconds (literally) of completing your application you will get solicitation phone calls from for setting up the BOC-3 form, insurance, etc. Nobody from the FMCSA will CALL YOU. You will get confirmation letters in the mail from the FMCSA, and then a letter telling you to call them to confirm the information, so they can add you to the safety inspection list (required by the FMSCA). So disregard all of the calls! I added a line to my voice mall message telling them that all of my papers had been filed or taken care please do not leave a message as it will not be returned, otherwise your voice mall will be flooded.

The kicker is when is when your authority is confirmed, you will get solications calls wanting to charge you to get an instant certificate say you have it! You do not need it, once its confirmed you can start hauling! You can print it out a copy on the FMCSA website!!!

Pharm and I can assist you with any questions you have.

Its is real easy, just a lot of paperwork thats it.

I was an o/o from 93-2000, then got a good office job, then got laid off in oct. 08. I was looking for local work, but I could not get hired because I had no recent experience (always insurance reasons)!

I will be going through the brokers on the load boards and building relationships with some of them, weeding out the bad ones and keeping the good ones. Basically it will be trial by error with the brokers. I just like to idea of doing what I want when I want!!! all I have to do is make sure all the bills are paid. If it works out then I will start going out and getting my own contracts to haul (thats a ways down the road though).

I called eclipse, they dont really do anything out of california, she diid mention something about onions in the summer time.

I'm pretty sure he knows all this :biggrin_25526:
Leasing is probably best for his situation. I know Wayne has a really good one, they're out there.

I do not know what his situation is, what works for him, or what he knows, I was just relaying my experience.

I learned how to tarp and load flatbed's myself when I was a local company driver and never had a problem. We were just thrown the keys to the truck and told to go load it and put tarps on it!

    lol. it's okay.
I was runing my families authority since I was about 17. I started out in trucking as an owner running under my families authority. I guess that pretty much ruined the rest of trucking for me ever since.

things were allot different back then though. we had to file everything with every state seperatly. it's a ton easier now but still different. WHen I go to get my authority, which is really my ultamate goal I'll likely need some advice. Afterall we suspended out authority in like 1998, it's been awhile.

hard times has brought me to this point. those "small" figures you list would take me 4 years to save in my present state of affairs

Phew! MM you took that well lol... I figured more advice from a newbie would just about send you through the roof :biggrin_25525:

So anyway, earmark your next tax return to get'r done! (and if you're not due anything, lie and cheat and pay them back a year later out of the proceeds lol)
