you burned your brakes because you were going too fast. If you were going the right speed the jakes would of held allot better. 9% at 80k you should have been about 25mph or less depending on how hot your brakes were already and how long it was

You can go down the mountain to slow for the rest of your life but you'll only go down it once too fast.

Thats transmission fluid in a car that gets checked running. You don't check oil in anything running you want it in the pan.

It decided it didn't want to be part of the truck anymore somewhere in FL or GA on I-95.

There one fuel stop, gone the next.

Yeah I know you keep saying that. The speed limit WAS 25 and my target speed. I just couldn't stay under it without keeping the pressure on the break. My ground speed should be around 25 in 7th, top end of 6th but it would creep up to 40 in about 5 seconds. I switched down to 6th and still didn't hold the truck back any better, just boosted the RPM's to blowup levels.

8th gear is too high for a 9% grade and 80k. I'm in 7th coming down Monteagle and that's only 6%. I barely have to hit the brakes maybe a couple times going down. I watch the tach, not the speed—when the jake won't hold it below 1800 anymore, I stab the brakes to bring it back down around 1400.

If you're in too high of a gear, the rpm's will be too low and the jake isn't as effective—your speed will rise quickly—and as a result, your brakes will heat up much faster. In eighth gear, by the time the rpm's come up enough for the jake to be effective, your gonna be going way too fast. I'd say the optimal holding power is going to be around 1700 rpm in 7th gear.

I have an N14 with a regular ten speed. The Jake will come on in 7th gear, but only above 1500 rpm. It seems like yours should too... maybe mention that to the mechanic. It might be a setting in the computer.

Pharm you need to get that truck out of the shop and back on the road. I know a trucker from Indiana that is driving circles around you this week.

Like MM said, on a grade like that, 25mph should have been the top end, not 40. On a hill like that, with no jake, I'd have let it run to 20, and back down to 15, up to 20, back down to 15...

There was a copper mine in Globe, AZ that I used to haul out of. There was one hell a long steep grade coming out of there and I had to stop about half way down to let the brakes cool... that was at a top speed of maybe 20mph.

Put your flashers on and go reeeal slow and easy next time. I enjoy the vids you post and I don't want to see any of them show up post mortem on CNN.
