A new owner operator should have a contract for the truck before you buy the truck. It's easy to make money out here if you have half a brain, some common sense, some trucking experience and some cash reserves. There are some really knowledgeable people here trying to help newbie o/o figure it out. It can be done, has been done, and will be done. Preparation, research and courage are required. Without all of those you will fail.

What is needed is a company that O/O's can lease to that has a training program that helps a driver become independent. Maybe even step them into it with starting out leased on, help them get authority and then continue to do the office work and once established they can start doing everything 100% on their own.

I made that post and my mind has been going a million miles an hour on that. I am already willing to do that now with any O/O that leases to me. I have someone starting next week and he will have complete access to load boards and the ability to negotiate rates. But doesn’t have to right away or at all.

Really the only additional thing that I would have to do that I am not already doing is create a more formal training program. But most of the training would be more of a hands on process. And just hired someone to manage the factoring company so that is off my plate.

And the wife is getting all the compliance and authority stuff detailed out so that would not be extra work. I pay 89% now and maybe move that to 93% when under own authority and still provide fuel cards and weekly pay.

I wouldn’t want to do it with someone that didn’t drive for me for an extended period of time. I think the relationship and time learning and building a solid business plan would be critical to success.

Great, now I won’t be able to sleep tonight thinking about this.
