What we did is paid on our insurance regardless of our driving or not driving. I think only once when one of our vehicles was pending sale (A older el camino at the time) we suspended the insurance policy on it saving us roughly 9 months and keeping the tags. We sold it and got another vehicle, resumed policy on the new vehicle and moved forward since then.

When times are difficult I'll cut my insurance to liability, however I do not just carry state minimum, I carry a little more than most for a small reduction in premium. But I never failed to pay on insurance. See, if you had a lapse of time without insurance at all, your next attempt to have your own policy might be overly expensive.

Lexus Nexus is the right insurance data base, but more about how it works.
Insurance rates aren't based on what you do, insurance rates are based off of groups. That can be age, race, or sex.
    It's a gamble.
They take the information from the Lexus to determine probabilities of you being involved in an incident.
On the other side of the coin, you are not only being compared to drivers in your group in your state, but every state.
If your record is clean, but someone in say Florida, who is counted in your group has a major accident and the insurance has to pay the claim, your rates go up.
    Same with homeowners insurance.
They have a disaster in say Texas and the insurance has hundreds of claims, those who use the same company in Washington will get a rate increase.
Because insurance is big business, they spread there loss to all of their customers not just some.
Doesn't matter if it's auto, home, property, renters, health etc.
