An astute comment as always my friend. There are programming and hardware challenges that I have been pondering and experimenting with for over a year now when it comes to this "IFTA thing." (Again - NOT for smartphones, but for laptops BUT the principles are the same.)

You have to log every mile without drops in data / you have to have a way to extract the data into a nice usable format / you need to be able to back out non-IFTA miles / the hardware has to be able to support the logging load and memory for the log files, etc, etc, etc. Not saying it can't be done, or eventually will be. But I always ask when someone brings it up what they envision doing. How extensive and complex, you know. Like the RM GPS logs miles in their way, the newer PCM Nav units now do it, but neither is "full-featured" when it come to closing the gap on IFTA logging by any means yet.

Then there is a huge liability factor for being accurate to the state authority when they file... ug. my head hurts. Ok. Sorry. And now back to your regularly-scheduled trucker app thread...

    Thanks as always,
    -Don

I can't see getting it to work without tying into the truck's odometer too. That wouldn't be accurate either because it's off due to tire wear and age. The phone is a good idea because it uses gps and triangulates off the cell towers at the same time. I opened my phone the other day in South Carolina to show someone and it insisted that I was in Tuscon for some reason. The technology just isn't quite there yet.

alright... instead of writing down mileage on the little note book ie...entry...15600 mo then 156500 ks you would have a simple thumbwheel app for mileage driven in the states, then email the totals print it off ! tada ifta report Im i missing someting or is that making it too simple????:biggrin_25513:

Oh, you mean entering it manually? That could work.

Well, L.B. mentioned on the first page of this thread that they had come up with a "mileage logger." Perhaps this has already been worked out for the iPhone app then???

I think that your manual method is a good start. You would have to back up the data somehow too though because I imagine a disaster if you have been entering your miles by state (either manually OR automatically) and the phone gets broken, stolen, or file corruption. They should build into it to back up to a server straight through the app daily or something like that.
