There was a guy in my class at the Community college who was 20 (just a few months shy of 21) He hired in where I'm employed just as I was in the final stages of training. I'm guessing they had him work on the dock until there was a spot with the mentors to work local and get the driving/load securement part of it down. Think he's pretty much ready/itching to be out on his own.

Yes common knowledge with insurance is 23-25, however get in with a small company or find someone who's willing to take you under their wing and show you the ropes. You may be doing only in state work but since your young you have your whole career ahead of you if you stick with it. Eventually you'll spread your wings.

A bit of a bump but...

I am 21 almost 22, got my CDL and my first job at 20. Took out a loan for the cost of a community college program and living expenses for 2 months and knocked it out. Luckily got in contact with a smaller OTR company (80ish trucks) who took me in right after completing the course and I went to work doing local and "regional" runs. The nice part about Illinois is you can amass some pretty good miles doing intrastate work which id imagine PA is not much different. I stopped at the DMV on the day of my 21st birthday to switch my license from intrastate to interstate while heading to El Paso for the first stop of a TX/AZ/CA load and been OTR since lol.

I currently work for another small company who requires 23yo and 2yrs experience but because my record is clean and I had excellent references I got the job. Point being its plenty doable at your age to get a trucking job and IMO the companies who will hire you are probably gonna be more desireable to work for anyways. It may take a little more investment on the front end but that and working hard will pay off in the long run.

    Chinatown Thanks this.
