Cost of Living? Weather extremes? cost of water/gas/electric?

Been looking at appt ads, but until I know what part of the city the yard is at... I can't do much but look.

I can tell you a little about the weather just from going through there so many times. South of San Antonio it doesn't rain much. It seems like SA is the line where it turns to desert. If you are used to northern weather you will never get cold living in SA. But it does get a little chilly in the winter.

When it rains it seems like it will never stop. I have run into rain north of Dallas and drove through non stop downpour all the way to SA and as soon as I got south of SA it stopped. Then coming back north from Laredo I run back into the rain at SA and it rains all the way into OK again. That is like four days of rain and it never stopped except south of San Antonio.

I would be interested in cost of living myself because I will moving to TX to look for work soon. Sounds like SA is where it's at except out by Midland/Odessa and I would just as soon make good money near a city than out in the desert.

I can tell you there aren't too many companies working out of San Antonio proper. Most of the action is 30 or more miles to the south. I've run into several people living in SA or Corpus that stay in company housing during the week.

The only companies I've found so far with yards in San Antonio are frac outfits : Baker Hughes, Weatherford, and Halliburton have large yards just south of town around I37 and Loop 1604.

I assume you meant I35 and Loop 1604. I wouldn't mind living Cotulla if there is anyplace to rent there.

Sorry, brain fart. I rarely go from SA to Corpus. I know I've been on that road but not often.

Cost of living is modestly low. Apt rents, for one BR units, are in the 500-700 range. When I lived in an apt (2008 ) my electric bill was around $60 per month. That's keeping a 700 sf upstairs unit at 70 degrees. Not much gas usage around here, especially not in apartments. Pet deposits are usually $300, with half of that being non-refundable. Some apartment communities have weight or breed restrictions.

Weather breaks 100 degrees every August. We usually get a few freezes every winter, in the high 20s. Cool weather starts in late October or early November. The weather is really nice in March and April. We have rainy spells in Dec/Jan and May/June.

The oilfield companies that have yarss have them SE of town (Elmendorf), or down in Pleasanton, about 30 miles south. Focus your apartment search in the area around Brooks City-Base (I-37 and SE Military Dr., also Goliad Rd.) to be close.

People who are from here are HORRIBLE drivers, and 1 in 4 don't have auto insurance, so make sure you have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on your POV. Also, they are real bad about ignoring the warnings to avoid low-water crossings when it rains.

While you're here, go visit the Ghost Tracks, have a Macho burger at Chris Madrid's, and don't worry, chupacabras aren't real.
