Hello everyone,
I have been lurking around here for a while now reading stories about trucking to see the picture from people actually doing the work. I decided recently this is the path I want to take and am looking for advice. I worked for a fiber company down in Texas in 2014 and it required alot of driving I was driving bucket trucks almost daily. I felt like I had freedom in that job as I was on the road alot without tons of micromanagement, sadly the company was small and business was slow and I was let go before my probation period was up.
I have been "self employed" for a year now as I fix computers, build computers and do custom liquid cooling for side money and its been nice and the hours are whatever I choose when I take on a client. Problem is I dont own a business so I doubt anyone would see that as being self employed but hey who knows!
To the point, I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me as Im in Idaho as my family is here and right on the I84 in the Boise/Nampa/Caldwell region. I was wondering since drivers are supposedly in such demand would it be possible for me to get into one of the "megas" that trains newbies and gets them their CDL while they have to sign a contract? Ive read alot of positive and alot of negative about Swift and Knight, I'm hoping I can just get into one of their programs and suck it up until the contract is up and find another company to drive for.
TLDR, any megas I should check out? Anyone else tried getting into this career without long work history? I'm 29 if that helps and have only one speeding ticket for less than 15 over within 3 years it was in 2013.
Interested in the career

The only hold up I see will be three years of employment verification. I would call one of the recruiters and ask them what they require to show what you have been doing for the last year.
This is a DOT requirement, not individual Companies, so it will be the same issue anywhere. What satisfies one thoguh, should satisfy another too.Sphene25 Thanks this. -
MCT Transportation has a terminal in Boise. Their CDL school is in Sioux Falls, SD
I'd try them first.Sphene25 Thanks this. -
Hmm I didnt know that. I wonder how one would prove you are self employed or were in the past. From around 2006-2013 I was doing the same as I am now. so I was self employed then from august 2013 until march 2014 I worked for a temp company before swapping to the fiber company down in Texas briefly. -
Tax returns, if you were filing, if it has been under the table, that could be difficult.

Did you file taxes when you were self employed?
In the past some that didn't file taxes just told the trucking company they were doing odd jobs just to survive and had a notorized letter signed by a couple of people verifying that. Lawn care, helped paint a house, fixed some plumbing leaks, etc.
Just ask the company what they require.Sphene25 Thanks this. -
Did not file but will for this year, I was making right about 10k a year so I was told not to file back then. I have a reference that could be called but other than that I dont know.

Thanks for the speedy responses, Im pretty certain I could come up with a notorized letter. Essentially building a computer for someone is not much different than painting a persons house, both are "odd jobs" when you dont have a business =)

Dude, you're in Idaho.
Skip the school and do it on your own.
I know for a FACT there's farming outfits in Homedale, marsing, grand view thatre always looking for drivers. No cdl required. Get your skills up, test out, then jump on with a mom and pop fleet.
I tell everyone, all the time to do it on their own, but you're in a prime position.Canned Spam Thanks this. -
Prime position? Is that like fetal position?thekidsixer Thanks this.
