This has happened about 5 times now in the last 2 weeks but 3 times this morning..
Driving down the road and all of the sudden I have no acceleration from pedal, it’s just dead , it stays running, NO engine lights come on — but it won’t rev up, if I pull jake down it won’t do anything like apply jakes , if I put it in neutral the rpm drops to idle , put it back in gear rpms come back up —— but no acceleration.
Then in 5-15 seconds it comes back to life.
Fault code in computer is a spn 5298 fmi 18 which appears to have something to do with regen or exhaust temp. But I’m not sure if that would make the pedal lose power?
Anybody got any ideas ORRRR does anyone know of a good mechanic / shop between Orlando or Savannah. —— heading north from Orlando tomorrow
Thanks

Do you have a ABS or TC light on the dash?
southbaydad Thanks this. -
Check all ground cables. And other wire connections or main engine harness. Or bad batteries. Very common types of issues with electronic controlled diesels.

All 4 batteries replaced couple months agoIntothesunset Thanks this. -
The reason I asked about ABS/TC lights is that you need to have your j1939 data link checked. On Volvo corrupted j1939 will cause dead pedal (Freightliner usually causes gauges to go crazy) Data link troubleshooting is not for a novice or the faint of heart. Been doing it for 20 years. Last one took me 2+ days to find. 5 minute to repair. Pay for the diagnosis on this one. Live to fight another day......

I experienced same symptom 5-6 times since June 2007 driving Volvos with D13 only, it's scary in traffic bussy hwys , seems like the truck wants to stop for few seconds , non responsive acceleration pedal, just idling and was caused by bad turbo actuator or turbo. I ignored it once and kept going, it occurred more and more often until the acceleration was almost dead,on I-35 in Texas, managed to pull it on service road , found a place to drop trailer and crawled slowly to Volvo in Waco,Tx. Volvo shops are usually trying to sell you the whole turbo for 4-5 grands without inspecting it, the actuator is priced around 1000$, but needs software for calibration.
I'm not saying this is your problem , just a thought from my bad experiences reading your description.
Btw, i remember similar problem caused by boost sensors got clogged with carbon or bad harness. this two sensors are easy to remove check clean or replace.Last edited: Aug 25, 2019

Thanks for your input on the turbo actuator. Turbo doesn’t seem to be acting up but I guess if the actuator is acting up it could be an issue.
Hopefully I can find a good shop because I don’t need dealerships throwing a bunch of parts on in hopes they fix the problem.
Thanks again for your reply -
