the one piggybacked on the starter is the same deal. to be honest i dont really see the need for two but thats the way its done. if you do thatbone you may as well just replace the whole starter since its out and its no fun to remove. i paid just a touch over $300 for the gear reduction unit on my 14L. btw. they are trying to make one part fit more applications now. a new starter may come with the solinoid AND another smaller magnetic switch(different name for.solinoid really) mounted to it. if it.dpes just remover the magnetic switch. i have two of them in my tool bag for two different starters i have bought

The 'extra' smaller mag switch is called an IMS and is needed on a 39MT series starter.
    SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED.

The 42MT I have on there now, doesn't need one as the current draw is under the requirement to have..

The 39MT draws more current and the IMS is needed. The IMIS will handle up to 300A.
...it's designed to prevent backfeed of current...essentially like a 'check-valve' in idea.

The starter relay connects to the IMS instead of the Solenoid itself.
The IMS then, in turn, connects to the Solenoid.

The 44MT (soon to be released when hell freezes over it seems) has the IMS incorporated into the starter solenoid itself.
Thats the IDEAL unit to get. My price on the 39MT was around $275...but no idea on the 44MT until it's released.

..I learned WAY TOO MUCH about starters this week :biggrin_25513:

I'm having an issue with my 2011. The starter is brand new, new batteries, alternator tests good, new battery shut off switch. Intermittently the starter drags, sometimes fires right up, sometimes won't turn over at all.

Any suggestions where to go from here? It's the 39MT starter.
