Certain aircards are set up to work on specific types of networks, i.e. they piggyback off AT&T's GSM network (or Tmobile) or they're on a the CDMA network of Verizon (or Sprint). I think sprint's CDMA, don't quote me.
It's kinda like buying a phone on EBay and taking it to the local phone shop to get a specific company's service, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. IF the card isn't set up to handle the signals of the company sends out, it's a paperweight.
A router and WiFi card aren't enough to be a hotspot, you need to have service through someone. If there's free WiFi around, you can go to it, or pay for a service. Make sure whatever you do, you close down your network, letting everyone and their dog use your internet access can lead to problems.

I started out on a shoestring budget. The first was SiriComm which covers Love's, Pilot and Petro for $21.95/ mo. Then I had to decide, T/A or FlyJ by the month. Picked FlyJ. Gotta be in the parking lot for these. Jack in the Box is free. Gotta go inside. Park next to a motel. Just got Motorola cell phone USB cable to connect to laptop (it doesn't use ur mins) and pay Tmobile $29.95/mo and cancelled eveythingelse. Also have a Linksys adapter which helps with the signal and finds networks when phone not connected.
Hard to start driving and afford afford all the goodies they don't tell U about! Pick a company with inverters and refrigs in the trucks too!!! -
NEVER, NEVER "Piggy-Back" on any FREE WiFi. (Use it with-out their knowledge and permission).
NEVER, NEVER "Piggy-Back" on anyone's UNSECURED WiFi.
Not only is this unsafe, but it is ILLEGAL. -
I use a Verizon data card in the USA and a Bell data card in Canada and have internet 24/7 on the road. I love it and it's well worth the costs.
The firewalls that come with Windows are usually not the greatest, nor are free anti-viruses but it's all in how much you know and how user-friendly you need the software to be.
I use NOD32 for anti-virus and have never used a firewall. I'm online 24/7 and have been for many years without any problems. It's all in the know of where you go, what you do and who you allow to have access to your computer
No one touches my computer but me. There are firewalls on the other computers at home

There are options for using your pone as a modem, usually it requires a cable and some setup. your phone has to be capable of handling the data stream, and your package has to accommodate it.
I prefer anm aircard and the $60, it's less of a hassle for me.

I have had a Verizon aircard for over 2 years and love it!

Millenicom is a reseller of Verizon and has unlimited data use through the same air card you get from Verizon for the same price. You may never go over the 5GB a month so it may not matter to you.
