I don’t know how they would enforce it otherwise. So I would assume that it would depend on what the manifest says.66seven Thanks this.

I would side with @NightWind on this one. Yanking cans is a level of expertise not implied in the question. Based on the question, I would also rule out a guy having his own authority pulling preloaded dropped trailers.

It was purely used as an example. That is a type of freight that can be hauled solely within one state but still requires interstate authority. I don’t understand why that was hard to grasp. But apparently it’s me that has understanding problems.MACK E-6 Thanks this.

Well, the reason I wondered is that for linehaul runs in the LTL business, the load could be bound for CA but for the purpose of your particular run they manifest it as destined to the next terminal along the route. Texas for example would have some long runs where the driver wouldn’t need to cross a state line.66seven, ElmerFudpucker and NightWind Thank this.

Intrastate means in the state period. It wouldn't matter what the BOL or Manifest says. What matters is that your company contracted to haul it from point A to point B within the state. Where you drop the load and it's final destination is of no concern to your company. The original post was about hauling ONLY in his state and questions about getting his authority. I have BOTH authorities intrastate and interstate so I have to know the rules. For instance in AL we have the PSC(Public Service Commision) who grants you the authority to transport loads WITHIN the state but NOT out of state. FMCSA grants you authority to cross state lines but has NO jurisdiction within the state regarding INTRASTATE load. Each state has it's own rules.

Origin and destination certainly do matter

Please read the parts NOT in yellow.
If you do the load 100% legally, for instance using the motor carriers b/l instead of the combination manifest- b/l it will just be a domestic move nothing more.
I guess there is no such thing as intrastate cause your truck and trailer manufactured parts are in other parts of the world and there fore even empty would require interstate permits.Last edited by a moderator: May 19, 2024

Really easy to get. Contact YOUR state licensing agency and ask how to get an Intrastate license.
Yep, there are in some areas.
NO restrictions. I have trucks which are only intrastate that move warehouse to warehouse or dock to processor.
Yep this is in regs, sort of but it is not enforced because the state doesn't have to enforce it.ElmerFudpucker Thanks this. -
And likewise if you have interstate authority you do not possess the authority to haul a legit intrastate load. But again this isn’t enforced either.
