I've heard they have to strip their trailers when they get back from doing their pickups, but they don't necessarily have to work loading outbound linehaul trailers. (P&D drivers)

In my short time with them being low man, I spent 85-90% of my night on the dock.
Edit. I was on L/HPintlehook Thanks this. -
That's what we do. Strip our p&d loads and load the outbound linehaul trlrs.Giuseppe Ventolucci Thanks this.

You guys have to do both at your barn? That sounds like a really long day. They could save money by hiring more dockworkers and not paying for expensive drivers on OT.Giuseppe Ventolucci Thanks this.

Our guys who start later stay and do that. If we are short or busy, then the early guys stay and help.Giuseppe Ventolucci Thanks this.

I'm so glad we have dedicated dock workers at my place. The only time a driver will work the dock is if he wants to, and that's just for linehaul drivers who will be waiting for a load and don't want to sit uncompensated. Those drivers can't be denied dock work, but as far as I know, our city drivers aren't even allowed to do dock work.Mike2633 Thanks this.

I don't mind doing that. Matter of fact, all drivers here do it on a regular day basis. We all empty out our trailers.
I am supposed to start my day at 9 am., but eff that I get there an hour earlier and load my own trailer, that way I know where I'm going and load it up systematically so that I don't have to be wasting so much time driving in traffic going back to a city I was just in an hour earlier. -
... And where exactly is this job you speak of , my friend ?
-
Dayton Freight. We aren't out in your neck of the woods. Our terminals are in the upper midwest mostly.
Now, I can't speak for how each terminal is run, so another DF driver could say his barn does things a little differently. There are times I wish I had been the one to load my route to avoid backtracking like you mentioned, but I doubt I'd ever be excited to jump on a forklift after running around the city all day.
It wouldn't be so bad unloading my own trailer, I just wouldn't want to deal with loading outbound linehaul trailers. I'm just not that good on a forklift. Our dock workers can perform surgery with those things!Mike2633 and Giuseppe Ventolucci Thank this. -
Con-Way, much like FedEx, is HELL on the micromanagement.Radman Thanks this.
