Depends on the load... Some companies are 90% preload drop/hook. Others don't allow you to even step on the dock. Some will require that you sign a form verifying count, on those you do have to stand there and count every case being loaded.

It can be a pain sometime. Especially, if the shipper is crooked. One grocery shipper in Milton,PA was/is crooked. The driver would check the load, then watch as they loaded on the trailer. Before you could go outside and pull away from the dock to close the doors, they would take a pallet off. So when you arrived at the customer, you would be a pallet short and the trucking company had to pay for that. The driver had signed the BOL and pulled away from the door, so tough luck.
One time I asked the forklift driver about this and he said, "Well, we're trying to keep the inventory looking good because the company might merge with another company and the inventory makes it look better than it actually is."

Refrigerated freight is lots of counting all the different stuff they put on truck sometimes. Like delivering to grocery store wearhouse. Sometimes they have to separate everything or brake it down. They pay lumpers to do this but it might take 6 hours and your sitting waiting. Most dry van load or unload in less then 2 hours

Oh goodness that's awful! Sooo...when I'm looking for companies, is there any way to tell if they work with shippers that do stuff like that to the drivers? What can you do in that situation?

Ew. I figured getting loaded/unloaded would be a nice break to read or color or something, but not for reefers I guess!

I just dump the problem on the trucking company so the final decision is theirs, not mine.

You'll have time for that at many shippers/receivers. Many times you're not allowed on the dock so they tell you to wait in the truck or break room. I usually just wait in the truck and take a nap or whatever.
Some companies trucks are set up with diesel apu, satellite tv, refrigerator, xm radio, etc. so waiting in the truck is comfortable.

@pattyj never did? EW? ....thought I read that somewhere when she was yelling at (or to ..) a goat~!! LoL.

True, tho D.A. . . . . ya really gotta pony-up the lingo a bit. I know you are 22 but in this world, act like you are 30 ish, and glean more respect. Not just here, but all-where. Ya got a lot of us hoping you make this, because as some said; women ARE good on the road~ once they get there. Hoping you get there, and keep us updated~!

We tell my 'almost' 16 y/o daughter to "put her big girl game on" when applying for jobs . . . and they think she's 19 or 20. Sometimes you gotta "grow for the moment!"

ps: just kidding, patty. You need a raz-ma-taz once in a while, LoL!
