I think direct current is nasty. Picked up one of thoes 12v coffee makers a while back and the plug got so hot it melted, the wires near the plug melted, and the ciggaret lighter socket melted. Even with a fused receptacle it messed things up. ouch.

Because a bunch of morons have crossed the cables or ran them in a way the insulation rubbed through causing a fire. So now everyone thinks you need to be a certified electrician to run a couple cables. And you must install a breaker big enough to handle a factory running 440 volt.
Stupid in my opinion. An inverter that uses 4 gauge cables is supposedly so dangerous, yet your starter that uses cables 4 times as big is wired straight with no breaker.FlaSwampRat, JonJon78 and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
The breaker can only take so much. It's a item we never dealt with when we ran a inverter in our rig. On or off was the two things possible with it.

starter cables apparently do not have fusible links for protection from short circuit. Sorry for an extremely inaccurate postLast edited: Jun 25, 2019

Wow ..... just wow .....
Elroythekid, FlaSwampRat, otterinthewater and 2 others Thank this. -
Thats between the ignition switch and starter. The cable going from battery to starter is always hot and has no breaker or fusible links.Rideandrepair and rabbiporkchop Thank this.

But when you're starting the truck none of the amperage is going through the circuit breaker since it's a separate circuit.

I am not a mechanic or electrician , the article I relied on is here
Blowing the Lid Off Car Fuses and Fusible Links
Fusible links can be found in a variety of places in cars and truck, but they are commonly used in high-amperage applications like starter motors,
And I could easily be wrongLast edited: Jun 24, 2019

You are right you are not a mechanic. You are confusing the little baby wire going to the bendix from the ignition switch with the main cables that run straight from the batteries.
I've changed starters on everything from a car to a truck to a bulldozer, 12v and 24v. The main cables which are an inch thick are straight connections, no fuse, no breaker, nothing.HoneyBadger67 Thanks this. -
Stinger SGP90300 High Power 300 Amp Circuit Breaker w/ Built-In
I'm using one of these (300A) with 0 gauge cables. Bigger wires can handle heavier loads without melting or catching fire. You can use 4ga, I suppose, but I run power tools and such off of mine.Dino soar, Rideandrepair and rabbiporkchop Thank this.
