I run mainly Montana so here is how we do it...

First thing to remember in Montana is that to get extra weight on your axle groups you MUST have an analysis for the truck and trailer. This analysis will give you the legal weights in 3 classes... Regular conditions you can run the legal speed limits at all times. 5mph conditions means that you have to slow to 5 mph for bridges on 2 lane roads. And DW21 conditions where you need 2 pilot cars on 2 lane roads and they must shut down any bridge, and you must come to a complete stop before the bridge and proceed across at no more than 5 mph and center line the bridge.

You will need all the axle spacings and tire sizes and you can fill out the PDF form from this link http://www.mdt.mt.gov/publications/forms.shtml#com

All of our trucks are registered for 132k and we also have quarterly GVW of 35k excess. Costs about $500 per truck per quarter. But we do purchase annual over dimensional permits for all of our trucks.

Just to give you and example of how we use this is a 4 axle tractor and a 3 axle RGN moving a JD 410 haul truck. My particular truck with that combination is 45,580 empty. Add to that 75k for the haul truck and you come up with 120,580. Since I can only legally bridge 96k with that setup, I need the extra GVW for that even though the cab card says I am registered for 132k. This is because the axle groups are overweight.

I forgot to mention that in some states that allow over 80k gross you have to register for the amount you want to permit for or you can not get an overweight permit. So say you are in a state that allows 105,500 but can only bridge 96k and you want to haul 100k you have to be registered for the 100k before they will issue a permit.

Depends on if you have an axle group that will be overweight.
