As the title says, is it legal to drive a tractor without mudflaps while pulling a trailer that has them?
I've been told by a DOT certified mechanic they're not needed. Is that written anywhere for reference in a DOT source?
Is a mudflap-less tractor while pulling a trailer legal?

Yes it is. You must have mud flap when bobtail. When I was with ozark and we did the containers we had to take mud flaps off tractor or they would hang on the chassis when turning.
-
Yes its legal.

You are fine as long as there's a trailer attached.

I had a driver tell me lights on the tractor do not need be working if you have a trailer attatched. his lights had a short. so he took his light bar off tractor. I thought he was crazy. still don't know, but if it's me ... everything is in working order.

All lights must work. I got a friend put out of service in Georgia because his brake lights didn't work on tractor but did on the trailer.
-
yeah but my guy's theory was if it is not on there they cannot write you up.if it IS on, then yes it has to work, so he took his off.
-
Still wrong. Equipment must have all safety/warning lights it came equipped with and they must work.
70s_driver Thanks this. -
I was given a non-OOS violation (3 points) in Kentucky in February for a taillight not working on tractor. I was pulling my stepdeck trailer.

All required lighting must work. Example: you have 9 cab lights across the roof. Only the 2 clearance and 3 identification lamps work. You are not in violation.
And just for thought... what if you are pulling a container chassis only? Still don't need mudflaps on tractor? Nothing to catch the mud and rocks flying off the wheels. I don't know or care, just asking.
