Snowshoes Thanks this. -
And "for the record", one month before I turned 18, I HAD TO sign up for the draft, as it WAS the law back then. But Viet Nam was coming to an end, I think Nixon ordered us out? So my number never came up.Snowshoes Thanks this. -

First of all, my Great Grandfather fought in WWI, I have his dog tag. My Grandfather fought in WWII, I have his dog tag. My Father fought in Vietnam, I have his dog tag. All 3 were in the Army.
Beside those three dog tags sits a blank one to represent me. See, during Desert Shield (not Storm...Shield), I went to the MEPS Center in Des Moines and took my test, passed, and did EVERYTHING else to join the service. As we all were standing in line to take the Oath, an Officer of the Navy came in and pulled me aside, and said they were unable to let me join...I said why...they said "you have a child that is one, and a new born---you will not make enough money as E1 to support your family, and we can't guarantee you housing after boot camp"....I said why don't you let ME worry about that....they said "sorry, we can't do that sir...here is a Taxi ticket back to the bus station".
I was DEVISTADED that I wasn't given the opportunity to do my part as 3 generations have done before me---but I tried. So yes...I feel I have the 'right' to call out deserters and point fingers. And I too was required by law to sign up for the draft on my 18th. birthday.Hitman, The Patriot, Snowshoes and 2 others Thank this. -
Not to mention if someone made a personal choice not to join that is perfectly ok. But if you stand there and take the oath to "Defend the United States of America against all enemies both foreign and domestic" you #### well better ride it out. It was his choice to enlist unless he was enlisted in the mid seventies. As that's when the draft stopped. I was gonna stay out of this one and not feed the troll but I guess it got the better of me

Wore Out. I was thinking that very thing. EXACTLY!
wore out Thanks this. -
I've dealt with numerous folks that have an OTH discharge.
That is NOT a Bad Conduct or Dishonorable discharge.
None of us know ...the rest of the story.
I've seen folks with an OTH discharge qualify for many veteran benefits.
my draft number was 43.......http://www.landscaper.net/draft70-72.htm
