Thanks every one for the input. I have done lots of soul searching regarding this change of lifestyle and I'll tell you that nothing excites me more. I know it won't be sightseeing, but being able to run all over the US in a tiny truck for weeks on end seems strangely addicting. I do not fool myself into thinking that this is an easy job and I'll make money hand over fist. Like I posted, we have solid work ethics. I don't believe I should be given anything that I haven't worked for. I like working and working hard. I just want to be compensated fairly.

Oh and we understand that most companies will train us separately.

Choosing a company seems to be the issue. If I want my schooling reimbursed I will need to sign up for at least a year ( understandably) but if a company is consistently treating their drivers poorly then a year can be a mighty long time...

Well there are as many points of view as there are drivers. Did the company thing for many years, then bought my first truck, then another, and another, we now have 5 trucks the wife drives one, I drive one and we have 3 hired drivers for the others all under contract with the same company. The wife and I team at times so to spend some time together otherwise we take time off or meet somewhere on the road. You get out of it what you are willing to put in, and the reason for your wanting to start in the first place. If it is money well like everything there are highs and lows sometimes you will be doing really will other times eh. The best drivers are the one's who love the road who are not tied to the almighty dollar and can stop and enjoy some of what this country has to offer.

For the most part i'm happy. I'm always moving which gives me a excuse to never ever go home which is fine with me because I hate going home plus I love the road but it'll be trial and error finding the right company.

If it's the money you're after, don't bother, ain't gonna happen....Don't forget, 85% of everyone that goes into trucking quits after just 6 weeks on avg... Now , if you are in it for the adventure in traveling,,,it may be for you...Some people don't like it when I say this, but I think it really is true..I saw this on a program once on tv, and a trainer of mine long ago told me the same thing,,"trucking companies are looking for people that are a little on the dumb side,, and have never made any money to speak of." Now , you will probably see a lot of people bad mouth me on that, and tell you all the big bucks they are making..But, a lot of people don't really know what IS a lot of money. Some people think $500.00 a week for 70 hours is a lot of money...And that's fine if that suits 'em..But it takes a lot of money to live on the road..Of course, sometime, that may be your only option to take small money. I remember a guy at Werner(lowest pay in the industry) tell me that he'd just finished up 6 months with them, and had made a grand total so far of a little over $9000.00. Now, that is a starter company, but still, that is terrible.... Okay, will stop with this now....Peace out People,,,don't go balistic over what I said...
