It means you can always drive an automatic with a full (manual-capable) CDL. If you’re going to invest the time and money to get a CDL, do so in a way that gives you the most options.

that's right, and the MOST options, is to get a CDL with NO automatic only restriction....

Does having an Automatic restriction on your CDL give you more or less freedom?

Do the CDL mills that pimp out auto-only restrictions have the best interests of these new drivers at heart or do they want trapped, indentured servant, wage slaves? The previous post is clear to those paying attention.

    LESS freedom from job searches

the school i taught at, only had sticks, back then. i ain't been back for so much as a drive-by, to even know what they teach nowadays, but i'd hope it would be still sticks.

one can always get a job driving automatics out the gate.

but "what if"....one has the restriction, and that "promised" job of an automatic went "poof", and nothing else is available BUT sticks..???

My sister drives for FedEx. She has an automatic truck. When the truck breaks down and they bring another for her to use, it’s always a manual.

Have a friend that drives local for US Express. He’s flat stuck there. Lots of local better paying full benefits jobs around, HOWEVER, you can’t have a restriction. He trained on a manual, but when it came time to test out, they told him the manual truck was down. The next day, the manual truck was up and running. They purposely porked him for US Express.

“Oh well, Six…what was I supposed to do?”

Anything but bend over and spell RUN.

I reckon they know who’s porkable and who isn’t.

In this life you really do get what you’ll put up with, and what you’ll put up with is what you deserve.

Off topic but the whole anti-bullying movement in schools has been hugely detrimental to kids. You think you won’t have to deal with aggressive people in the workplace as an adult?!? LOL

Anti-bullying lessons don’t stop bullying. All they do is change whose doing the bullying. Instead of the football player, now it’s the sensitive transgender with purple hair doing the bullying. It teaches that to deal with conflict you must get some third party involved and act passive aggressively instead of dealing with it directly with the other party like a man.

I mean just about every local LTL carrier in the industry right now runs either mostly or all automatics. Sure he won’t be able to drive tanker probably for awhile because they’re still mostly manual because of surge. But I have a auto restriction and it’s never limited me, you just have to be near a good transportation hub like I am.

If you have a choice, get a full CDL. With all of the endorsements. Everything. Except passenger. There is no sense in being a school bus driver, they don't get enough hours to make working worthwhile. If you get an automatic restriction, and want to move up to a "real" company, I assume you will have to re-test.... as well as learning how to drive a manual, no synchro heavy truck. Too much work for something you should have learned the first time around.
