Also, does anyone know if they still take students right out of CDL school?

Go to their website. It gives the requirements, but they vary. Regional is minimum 1 year experience with 6 months OTR. Another type is a minimum of 4 months. They also have call, text, or chat on the website.

I know Drivers there, and they’re pretty decent company. I wouldn’t put them in the upper echelon, but you could do a lot worse.

Averitt does NOT take newbies with no experience. Averitt is/was a great company for some drivers. They are looking for "boy scouts" who go to church and think following the rules are a way to have a nice calm life. BTW, that is how I see life. Averitt is NOT looking for "cowboys" who think the rules are just some obstacle you have to get around. Averitt has many different types of driving jobs and they have MANY different customer accounts where conditions are very different than the rest of the company. For example, OTR based in Nashville always had a bad reputation because they have too many drivers and so it was hard to get enough miles per week. OTR out of other locations was making much better money.

Averitt requires and enforces wearing uniforms and boots or shoes, no pets, and no-smoking in company facilities. They MIGHT allow smoking in OTR trucks. I never worked OTR for them. I worked only on a dedicated account for 18 years. If I had a magic wand all employers would be as nice, clean, corporate as Averitt. But I had complaints. My dedicated account required 6 day work weeks for the last 5 years I was there. I used every thing possible to stay with the company but I was not willing to work 6 day weeks (a customer demand) for another 15-20 years before I retired. When I left Averiit on excellent terms and worked elsewhere I discovered how much money I gave up by working for the soft dedicated account life. I made enough money fast enough with other companies I could retire by age 60. My dad, my brother, and I all worked for the company for years. They are very fair, but if you break their rules you will be gone, no exceptions, no pity. Some drivers think fair means the rules should only apply if they like the rule. To me that's childish and unprofessional.

When I started Averitt required 2 years experience and a great record. They eventually dropped it to 6 months experience plus going to their "driver finishing school". They list all of their requirements on the company website, AverittExpress.com

20% of all Averitt company employees have 20 or more years with the company. That speaks to the quality of the company in my eyes. I stayed with the company for 18 years and spent the last 2 years looking for a different part of the company to transfer.

Is the "no pets" rule universal across all accounts and terminals? I obviously wouldn't bring my dog inside a terminal building, but I definitely need a company that will let her stay in the truck with me.

Yes, no pets in any truck under any circumstance. If you or someone reports seeing a pet in an Averitt truck it means someone is sneaking an unauthorized pet. NOBODY is allowed to bring a pet. Averitt does farm out some freight to Owner-Ops. So seeing a blue Western Star tractor with a pet inside pulling an Averitt trailer does not mean the company changed its pet policy. You will get fired on the spot for bringing a pet into an Averitt truck.
