Is Butler a good starter

I have no manual restriction on my license, so I don't have to worry about that part. I still have quite a few companies looking at. Because of my situation, I filled out almost 50 applications. Once I return to the US next month, I will be calling to follow up on applications. Because of pay, Butler and PTL are both favorites. Come Thanksgiving, I should know if I have a list of companies from which to choose or relying on one company to give me a chance.

 

I don't know if they had changed the lease program from when you were there, but by the end of orientation there were like 8 of the 20 drivers who decided to go lease. One of the drivers in our orientation group found some information that he was sharing with people that he was claiming was the secret to making leasing work. I had no interest, so I don't know what he shared to convince people.

For anyone picking a starter company, a short checklist that saves a lot of pain: get the training pay and the contract length in writing before you show up, and read the payback clause twice - that is the part that bites people who leave early. Ask how many actual driving hours you get with the trainer, not just weeks in the truck. And look up the company on the FMCSA SAFER site before you sign, it is public and free - crash history and out-of-service rates tell you more about how a fleet is run than any recruiter call. A mediocre first year at a company that actually trains you beats a great promise at one that does not.
