Cargo theft organized crime rings know what is in the trailer by the seal on the hasp. They watch the shippers locations and note the trailer numbers. High value cargo is high dollar payoffs. You get loaded and head to your destination. They follow and and at a opertune time, take your load.
Then there is the driver who drops his loaded trailer at some location and bobtails home, off to shop, or go eat some place. No lock on the doors, just that flimsy metal or plastic seal. They go back to get the trailer and never even do a walkaround to see the doors have been opened and then arrive at the receiver and are surprized they are short. If the gate guard doesn't inform them the load is rejected for not being sealed.
Just a padlock on the doors will stop 95% of all cargo theft. And a high security trailer door lock will stop 99% of cargo theft.
2 minutes to put a lock on the door will save you days of headaches if your trailer is broken into.

With the way some places rent trailers for storage, then lock them up and forget to put a kingpin lock on it... this doesn't really surprise me.

Just a couple of factoids that will help a driver understand cargo theft.

Most cargo theft is a inside job.

Most cargo theft happens before it hits the trailer; on the dock.

Lately, Texas is by far the greatest state for cargo theft.

Mundane food and clothing followed by electronics, are the most common stolen.

Those facts should clue a person in to who is steeling.

He said nothing stolen. Just opened doors cut seal and got inside. Had to get someone to inspect load since couldnt deliver. So goes to T/S waits to deliver next morning and sure enough same thing but at different parking area. Once again nothing stolen.

I agree on the You Tube Truckers mostly being clowns but this guy(Red Viking Trucker) seems to be a good guy. Doesnt say name of Company and answers good questions for new guys. Trucker Josh is another good one. Most others are morons.

A beer company in Atlanta had loaded trailer stolen from their warehouse. The dumb ### company leaves loaded trailers on yard with NO fence or security.

Yeah that kinda stuff is preventable. I guess I should have said the point the guy was making was about trying to Park with trailer to another trailer or wall etc... Plus with many trucks having APU plus maybe the reefer running you may not hear thieves.

It seems that cargo theft is mostly from dry vans or reefers. If a thief can get a 20 ton generator off my flatbed in the middle of the night I would have to doff my cap to him.
