hello. im a "wannabe" trucker and i wanted to get a better underrstanding on the industry to see if being an OTR trucker is even for me.
21. currently unemployed. no kids. no obligation to come home every weekend.
what are some of the red flags or reasons company's will NOT hire you? lack of experience? criminal record? not so clean driving record? and another question I had was, are tattoos frowned upon in the trucking industry? Ive made some future-costing spur of the moment decisions and have tattoos on my neck hands and arms. Im trying to find a well paying career where it doesnt really matter what you look like. i have my heart set on being a truck driver. make enough $$$ and get some tattoos removed. any advice/comments are appreciated.
is driving for me??

I have done my research on this extensively.. You are going to be the representative of your company when your out there , talking to the customer or the receiving crew, so just present yourself right. Companies are picky and they can afford to be picking these days, some go back 3-5 years for misdemeanour's and 5,7, or 10 for felonies. Most important is going to be your driving record, suspensions, excessive speeding, Hit and runs, can all cause them to look for someone else. If your license has less than 2 infractions within the last 2 years, and you have no criminal record than you are a good Canadate for the mainstream trucking companies. If it has trouble than there is still a company for you.. they may pay you .10c a mile but you get the point, get your experience and move to a better company.

I wouldn't worry to much about your tatts,I myself don't have many, but I have a couple friends with more tattoos than open skin, and they make more $$ than I do..I make $50,000+ on just the Trucking end.

Is driving for u? Nope.
Jk if u dont have any family obligations the hardest part will being away from home and the long hours u can search for a thread I made on my observations so far (stone cold rookie)
As for tats they could care less I do applaud u for trying to "better" urself too many fat slobs that turned this industry into a bottom of the barrel job in societys eyes -
Just do it!
You have thought it through enough that you found this assume site and signed up. That alone means you want it.
Like all jobs, it has bad days, but then you have great days. Your not stuck in a cubicle with a loser boss over your shoulder every two min. Your young and un-attached, hit the road and see the states. You will have to pay your dues being new but that will pass quickly. Just be safe about what you do.
Do your research, this site has great information and really great people on it. Read, read and read some more. All the answers are here. -
Everyone always said trucking wasn't for me when I was 21. I'm 43 and still doig it. I had a tough road at first. I stayed in new York and the northeast every week. I got fired from my first job and I tried real hard to keep it. Everyone one always said that they did me a favor and I need to do something else. I have no tattoos. I keep my hair cut every couple weeks. I wear nice clothes. I can't stand trucks stops. If I must stop at one I rarely touch anything. Germophobic you might say. I'm glad I didn't listen to anyone and stayed with it. Nowadays I don't work holidays, weekends, make lots of money and love it.
