Spending it "foolishly" is strictly in the mind of the spender.
Of course I do understand what you are saying. But to my way of thinking, if being stranded somewhere for several days bothered me, (and it would,) I would not consider renting a car to be any more foolish than repeatedly paying for a cab to go some place. But of course, that is just me.

Out this way, we also have "Zip Car". it's much like a daily rental deal. My niece gets one for about $9 per hour.
Don't know how wide spread this company is however.

I had not heard of this company before now. THANK YOU! It looks like it really might be a good option if you happen to be in a city where zipcar has a facility. One thing that bothered me a bit though, was that there was nothing on their website, at least that I could find, that tells what it actually COSTS. Like how much is the application fee, how much is the membership fee etc. Seems like they would put that info out there, right up front. . .

There is a video, anywhere's from $9 per hour, or by the day, or the week, or the month each one you would want would be charged accordingly.. I think it is a monthly fee of $7 as well, the application is free.
They really do not need any special place to park. The location near me, is at an old gas station I used to work at, as a youngster. That building now is remodeled still looks like a gas station but it is a neighborhood association place now. SO the Zip Car company needs only a few cars at any location.
My niece got a card she taps it on the window, and she gets in. the keys stay in the car, 24/7/365. the card is electronic, and allows the car to start when she turns the key. There is also a zip code locator for a location near most people. -
OK, obviously I didn't go far enough in my looking at their website. The info is there, I just did not look hard enough. Of course the nearest one to me is in Vegas, about 150 miles away. Guess I won't be using them. . .
