If your reading comprehension is well, you should not have an issue getting a CDL.
Diploma or GED is not needed to get a job in trucking. Some employers might make it a requirement but very few ask, and I guarantee almost none check.Rideandrepair, tscottme and OldeSkool Thank this. -
If you read the book on CDL test from your state. You will learn and remember stuff. They like to put in tricks questions on CDL test and play with how they word a question sometimes. The question you know answer them first. The questions you are not sure you can skip till end of test. Then read them closely and pick the answers that makes the most sense or best guess.

I have a CDL and no GED. It’s never a problem getting a job. They just want someone that will actually work more than anything now days.

My first driving job I had to show my HS diploma but that was 15 years ago. Applications do ask for highest level of education completed and/or last school attended. Do they verify it? Who knows?Rideandrepair, tscottme and lual Thank this.

People overthink and over analyze themselves into a life of unemployment or underemployment.
Geeze, you're not applying to be an astronaut and fly to some distant galaxy.
Driving a forklift in a busy crowded warehouse is much more complicated than driving trucks.Last edited: Dec 12, 2025

$6k for a CDL?
Depending on where you live -- you could get a CDL for free (or close to it).
Google "free CDL near Florence, SC"....
-- OR --
Google "free CDL training at Wallace in Dothan, AL"
I saw the above Wallace opportunity on a highway billboard, just yesterday (December 12).
Be sure to shop around -- various workforce-related grants &/or scholarships can really take a lot of the "bite" out of CDL tuition (or other related) costs.
In Georgia -- where I got my CDL several years ago -- I figured that I spent (at most) around $1,000 -- thanks to Georgia's "HOPE" scholarship program...& related scholarships.
ALSO: Chinatown (above) is right.
Don't be guilty of "paralysis of analysis".
Life is incredibly short.
If you want something (like a CDL) -- get out there, & MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Like you -- I wasn't sure I could do it.
Now, several years later...in hindsight...I'm glad I tried...& especially that I stuck with it, even when things looked bleak.

You don't need a High School diploma or a GED in order to get a CDL, fam.

Get the CDL. Get the GED later if desired. Better yet focus on learning what interests you. GED is required if you plan on taking College courses. Don’t worry about Liability or a “deep dig”. No one cares, it’s not that important. Structured education is highly overrated. Designed to train you to follow rules. The whole model has been broken for years. Visit any factory and you’ll see why school is structured like it is. Bells ring, go to locker, use bathroom, go to lunchroom. Truth is a high number of Truckers didn’t graduate high school. They may not admit it, but it’s true. Common sense is what’s needed. Half the population can’t spell good. Anything taught in School can be learned twice as fast on your own, especially since the Internet. Just go for it. Quit doubting yourself. Glad to hear your making progress. Each step builds more confidence. Sometimes blind faith is the best way to make progress. The rest will fall in place. Just do it. All that’s needed is desire, and mainly action.
