there's a school that can train me to drive a school bus (which is CDL class B), but I want to eventually transition to a class A. Once I get my class B for free, do I actually need to demonstrate that I can operate a class A truck to get my CDL class A, which would mean I'd need to go to another schooling for that?

Yes you need to demonstrate. It’s a combination vehicle. Whole new road test and written test.
