Since we already have California Hazmat/tanker people here, I am looking for recommendations for the Bay Area, preferably north bay/east Sacramento, close to Napa Valley/Clearlake for family bonding!
I am specifically wondering what branch of Hazmat pays best. Fuel? Cryo? Chemicals?
I am guessing tanker will pay better than van?
I am relocating and wanting to find the best paying job I can.
I have had A-TPX for 20 years, never ran Hazmat tanker before, but did a little dry Hazmat long ago, and also used to drive water trucks, in addition to heavy haul, Flatbed, fire department, tow trucks, etc, as well as being a diesel/industrial mechanic, operator etc, with a lot of emphasis on safety and OSHA regulations, so I think I will do well and pick it up fast, and I have a clean record, on the road Western 6 in dry vans for the last 5 years at A&M Transport (thank you @Chinatown!).
I know I might have to start at a lesser place that will train, but I want to start checking at the top, and know where to set my sights if I have to start lower, and what branch to seek experience in.
I am hoping to stay mostly local, but if it pays better I don't mind longer trips, but I am feeling the need to get out of the truck more than once a week and bathroom stops lol
I don't mind night work, in fact I am much happier seeing the sunrise before bed than getting up at sunrise. (my circadian rythm is basically off 8 hours compared to "normal people" lol)
I would just as soon avoid tiny gas stations in San Francisco, though that's where much of my early driving was (construction/Caltrans/PG&E etc), but if it pays better I will do it!
I am aiming for something over 6 figures, which I expect might involve a lot of overtime to reach, so I look forward to any advice or hearsay of the companies or fields I should look in.
Also, if the pay is enough higher, I could be further away from the Bay Area if needed.
And again, if the pay is there I have no preference about Unions or not.
Thank you!
