Is it true that you have to waive your workmans comp rights in lieu of Stevens self provided insurance?
I read that if you get hurt on the job, you have to be treated in Dallas by the Stevens doctors. Can you verify this?

    Thanks!

Here's a prime example of the BS that some people sling on a site like this. They hear things, add to the exaggeration, and then spread the lies they have only heard.:biggrin_25510:

Okay, you will have a roommate. But then while out with a trainer you'll be sharing your trainers truck and much tighter conditions than a hotel room. Though even I can only speak to what happens after orientation. I didn't attend the CDL school there.

Um, there is a catering van that hangs at the drivers lounge in Dallas for a good part of the day, plus there are several pizza joints and other restaurants that I have personally ordered food from. As with any situation it is what you make of it. The food they provide isn't great, but it's edible and when your hungry you'll make the most of it.

There are also a couple of company cars that you can check out once you get your truck so you can get to Wally World, Sears or where ever.

I was paid 26CPM back in January of 2008. Again, I didn't attend the school, but I do remember being told to be sure that I brought enough money to supplement the meals they provided. Once out with your trainer you get a fuel card where your check can be deposited ... they actually pay you to work ... imagine that. You can also split your check between accounts ... some one the fuel card, some in the checking account or whatever ... helps with sending money home.

As much as it pains me, there is some truth to this one. No you can't go home if you're under a load. But there are many times that I have repowered a truck and took his/her load to free them up to get home. One of the things they also don't allow is a 34 hour reset while under a load. But then I've repowered folks that needed a reset. So, it's all based upon perception.

Um, Stevens has only one terminal ... Dallas, Texas. It's at 9757 Military Parkway ... google it, it's quite large. There are many contracted drop yards that Stevens makes use of around the country, but they are NOT terminals. Meaning simply, there are no facilities there for the most part. In Laredo, TX there is a drivers trailer with some showers, but no offices. You can only get company paperwork (eg, safety, logs, etc...) taken care of in Dallas.

You NEVER pay for company equipment at Stevens unless you've damaged it, are a lease operator or an owner operator. Any company that made you pay for anything on a company truck should be charged with extortion. It's not your truck, they take care of all maintenance, fuel, tires and so on with their company trucks ... lease ops and owner ops are a different story obviously.

Not true. Your paycheck is deposited in your checking account, or on a fuel card. The fuel card works the same as an ATM card. Advances are a convenience, not mandatory, and are NOT recommended by ANYONE at Stevens.

Stay away from folks that don't have first hand experience with a carrier. I worked for Stevens Transport from January 08 to July 08. Due to a personal financial issue ... the house was in foreclosure before I left ... I was required to be home to take care of personal business.

I would be happy to answer questions for anyone thinking of going with Stevens ... they are a good company, but as with all large companies they have their rotten apples too. You'll find that with any trucking company I'd wager.

Good luck, and don't let people with no personal experience sway your decision. It's all what you make of it.

I honestly think the people who praise Steven's haven't actualy worked anywhere else to compare them too... Get a real good job with a carrier and you'll soon see the light.. Steven't is a POS company.. right down in the bottom with the rest... Prime, CRST, & FFE to name a few others.

Yes it is true about the workman's comp. Stevens is self insured and they like to have control over the situation. In addition, you also sign away your ability to sue the company, entering into mediation instead. It is all right there in the Driver's Manual.

There are a few drivers in Dallas that were hurt on the job and are now being treated in Dallas instead of going home. They are usually put to work doing office type work or driving a shuttle bus. When the day is over it is back to the luxury accomodations at the Ambest. They are paid during this time but it is not as much as a driver would make.

Gonzo has an ax to grind....

    I have a real job.

I make more money with Stevens than I did as a food manager working 80 hour weeks, because so many people today really don't want to work, they just want to be paid.

Stevens is a training company. It is the individual persons attitude that makes or breaks that person. someone with 18 years experience running outlaw would not be happy with ANY carrier that requires legal logging. There will always be people who only feel good about themselves when they can belittle other people and other companies, without ANY first hand experience.

Gonzo...you're wrong. I ran with ONC, PIE, (both line haul), Tillamook Co-op (Food Tanker), and Continental before Stevens.
Stevens is more organized, maintains the equipment better and has better facilities than any of the others.
    Apology accepted.

Never heard of any of those companies.. except maybe Contental.. I've been driving since 1988 so I guess you could say I know a little somthing about trucking.. I even worked for Steven't back in 1990 or so.. I left after 6 months they sucked back then and I see no improvements since then.

< I belive a lot of the problems today are with the newbies comming into the business, they seem to think they all know everything and don't want to admit or listen to someone who has been there and has a lot more experiance . They are bound and determined to prove someone else wrong and won't admit it when they've made a mistake..

Well Gonzo you have now proven yourself to be a liar....

    Quote from other thread

Well "T" I wouldn't get caught dead working for Steven's so getting my information second hand is ho I get it.

And here you claim you worked for Stevens in 1990 or so.

    over there

(Off hand I know FFE is worse than Steven's, I leased on to them and only lasted 6 months... I saw first hand how their op is run and how their students were taught.)

Nope the problem today is lies told by people like you.

You are bound and determined to prove me wrong also.... you won't listen to a different way of thinking that does net me a satisfying living. Your way works for you, but it will not work for me. Open your mind, stop with the lies to try and prove someone else wrong, and you want people to take your method seriously, then talk about what you actually know, what worked for you, and what did not work for you. stop with the company bashing.
