When I first got out of school with my license (in 94) I got on with a company that ran Produce from Salinas, CA (the city based in) up to the rail yard in Oakland,CA then we'd bobtail over to Richmond, CA to a drop yard and pick up an empty then head back to Salinas to drop the trailer in our yard and that was it for the day... so might be able to find something local doing container hauling type stuff... pay was / is less than desirerable adn I know the company that I was at the equipment was even worse than the pay... I was in a late 60's GMC/White/Freightliner COE with a 6v12 detroit that took 2 gallons of oil every morning for the 200 mile round trip and the tranny was so sloppy you couldn't tell the differnce if it was in gear or neutral by wiggling the shifter !!!! But it was a starting point at least !!!!

My first Truck driving job was driving a cab over pulling a 29' side dump at a large winery.

Getting a job is tough - too many drivers out of work . For local work with smaller companies it's more who you know than what you know . You might consider taking a nondriving job with a company that has trucks to be known and available when an opening comes up .

Sure its all possible, you could win a tri-state lotto on your way to DMV. LOcal just go to a dirt company, regional sure lots of companies that are regional only. Dedicated, sure they will be dedicated to keeping you away from your home 3 to 4 weeks then because they like you allow you a whole day off when you give them 3 weeks notice. Sure its all possible. You might even get a dispatcher thats not a jerk. How likel;y thats another story.
