Sounded like a big #####fest. I don't get it. Is IT really that bad? All i seem to read is mostly negative about the industry. If it's that bad the local burger king is hiring, you'll make more than the 2.50 that guy was making and i'm sure flipping a burger is easier.

Do i really want to waste my time if its really that freakin bad? Maybe i'll have a different outlook on it cause i'm not looking to get rich, drive 8-5,get patted on the back, etc.

Yeah, dude, it IS that bad out there. Especially if your over 50. I've been outta work for 17 months. Burger King ain't hiring unless you Habla Espanol and yer under 40. Ever warehouse jobs are demanding a friggin degree. Not cause the job needs it but simply as a way of cutting down on the number of applicants. I got sent to apply for a shipping clerk position the other day. On the first day, they received 7,000 applications. 800 were walk-in. For one friggin job!!

The generally accepted figure for nation unemployment right now is 12% to 16%. (The government is only reporting 8.6% but that doesn't include the 99'ers that have run out of UI benefits and don't show up on the government statistics anymore.) That means more than 1 in 10 people that used to be working is unemployed.

My last job was paying me $18.75 an hour. Now I would take $8 and be glad to get it. Even WalMart won't hire ya if you're between 45 and 65.
(they get a break from the feds for hiring over 65.)

THINGS ARE BAD OUT HERE! And don't let anybody tell ya different. Texas is better off than a lot of places and I still can't find work. I'm living in a Fema trailer since my landlord evicted me cause I couldn't pay $900 a month rent. Had to sell my most precious possession, my bike, to buy the trailer. (ya do what ya gotta do.)

I'm not even sure I can pass a DOT physical anymore, with my bad knee, bad shoulder, high blood pressure (not really all that high but close), and sleep apnea. But I'm willing to sign a $6000 note to get my CDL back & get back to driving after 20 years of being off the road.

But I don't have any choice!! I gotta do something!

This sounds like a very poor excuse. Can you prove this? If so, you have a lawsuit on your hands.

Oh. you're on of those ""You people just don't want to work" people, aren't you? Well I got news for ya. Age discrimination is real and almost impossible to prove in a court. No employer is gonna say "Sorry but you're just too old" They just don't bother to call you back.

But statistics don't lie. 78% of people who have been out of work for more than a year are either over 50 or under 25. But you look & see how many people over 50 you see working in any fast food place. I found out (from a friend who's an HR rep) that the over 50 crowd is not wanted because of the hit the employer's health insurance takes. Most companies now pay an additional premium for every employee over 50. They can't pass that premium on to the employee because it would prove age discrimination.

Also managers are very hesitant to hire new employees that are of their parent's generation.

I've gone to interviews for jobs doing exactly what I have done for the last 15 years. The minute I walk into the room, I can see in their faces that this is another job I won't be getting because of my age. I've applied for and been interviewed for jobs doing everything from selling tools to mopping floor & scrubbing toilets. Even to companies that list the same jobs repeatedly. One outfit even sent me an email telling me to quit applying, even though they have continuous openings. My job log shows I have applied for over 7,000 jobs since May of 09. I've had 96 interviews and zero job offers.

Things are bad! And if the Republicans get back in, they'll get worse. FAST!

Actually in today economy they find other more "legit" reasons not to hire you.

I was told I wasn't local on a position that was 47 miles away. Another company told me my experience wasn't recent enough on protocols that haven't changed in a decade.

I hear every say their salaries haven changed in a 10 years. Mine has.. It dropped from 100K+ to 50K and it's still falling fast.

The paramedic jobs I had Burger King paid more and had better hours.

All this advice is great, but the trucking industry is not the only slave labor profession out there. Personally being on the road for 10 hours without someone yelling at me would be a welcomed relief.

Despite all the hardships you continue to roll, why? That is what I want to know.

Wow you had that many interviews?? I have had three in the last two years.

The other problem I have is people looking at my resume and saying as soon as the economy improves he'll be gone. That may have been the truth 10 years ago, but not now..

I can sit in a truck for long hours, not a whole lot different then sitting in a server room for long hours by yourself, having to wait till after midnight to get a critical job done, or getting yelled at because you are late, except the scenery changes. :biggrin_25523:

I'm not sure if this is an option BUT, I would think if you were willing to lease a truck from a company they would hire you more readily then that of a company driver. A lease transfers all the risk and liability to you so at that point, the added cost of health insurance for over 50 would no longer apply to them. From what I've read, leasing is usually a bad experience for drivers but some do prosper more than company drivers. This may be a good last resort if all else fails.

I can't vouch for the Rep. vs. Dem part, but I send my resume in for jobs about 10-20 times a week. I have had 3 job interviews in the last two years. I have had more positive responses from the trucking puppy mills than I have had in a long time.

As for the politic I am voting for a complete purge.. If the word incumbent can be used with their name they need to be unemployed.
