Where are you renting even a dump of a house for $400? I just rented out a studio in Green Bay, WI for $400 plus utilities.
Rent/housing for hourly workers is approaching or above 1/3 of gross income. At that point living becomes challenging.
Is it slow for everyone

Well, I know people from overseas, who come here, live in the truck for 6 months, save and then go back home. They don't pay rent or mortgage, no health insurance, no car, just cellphone bill and food. Should we now compare ourselves to them or what?
When I was 22 and making $2500 per month, I was feeling like a king with no bills other than $200 for a rental room.
Now, that $2500 would just cover health insurance and a daycare for one of my kids.
This whole argument is comparing apples to oranges -
It sure seems that the ones complaining the most about money seem to live in or near major cities. When you live in those areas things cost more than those of us who live in more rural areas. And we can have nice homes and good schools for our children too.

Middle of nowhere South Dakota. I know if you went 40 miles to Mitchell that same house would probably be 800 a month, but they'd be renting it to multiple college students. Again, I'm aware there are other places much more expensive to live, but just because one group of people can't live on 50k a year doesn't mean nobody can.D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

When you get married and have kids you need to earn more, I'm not arguing that. I'm saying the statement "nobody can live off 50k a year" couldn't be more wrong.D.Tibbitt, Midwest Trucker and TTNJ Thank this.

Exactly. Joe seems to think everyone lives in Chicago. You can work the dock of any LTL company here and start at $18/hr and buy a home for $800/mo easy. College isn’t everything folks. I’ll be ###### if I suggest college to my son. What a waste of time and money.Rubber duck kw and Oscar the KW Thank this.

I understand what you are saying but unfortunately you are in the minority for your generation.
Keep busting your ### and you will be ok.
Here is a quick example/story....
A friend of mine has a machine shop and when you are first hired on you are in a 90 day probationary period. During this time you wear a bright red uniform. After that 90 day period you graduate to the standard blue uniform.
He had a policy that if you crashed a machine you would be disciplined with 3 days off without pay. He started to notice a trend that his younger male operators would crash a machine on a Wednesday or Thursday before a long holiday weekend. One particular employee caused a lot of damage so he got involved in the process with the HR group. When the young man was told he was getting 3 days off he looked at the owner of the company and asked for 5. The owner decided no more days off...he decided the new discipline would be to lose your blue uniform and back to a red uniform. Machine crashes almost went to zero. Humiliation and peer pressure meant more than not working. MOST of the younger generation just don’t get it.fordconvert, Midwest Trucker, SteveScott and 2 others Thank this.
