When I go into rest areas after midnight, frequently there will be multiple trucks parked on the shoulder of the ramp into the rest area and on the shoulder of the ramp to exit the rest area. And, usually, all the semi-truck parking spots in the rest area will be taken except for the first parking spot in the rest area. This parking spot that I call the first truck parking spot in the rest area is the parking spot in a rest area that is closest to the entrance ramp to a rest area. It is the spot right next to the curb. It is the first truck parking spot a trucker will encounter when entering a rest area. When I enter a rest area after midnight and the first parking spot is available in a rest area, I always park in the first truck parking spot in the rest area. Intuitively, you would think that the first truck parking spot in a rest area would be the first truck parking spot taken in the rest area. But, counterintuitively, the first semi-truck parking spot in a rest area is usually the last spot to be taken. This has allowed me to get a parking spot in a rest area after midnight countless times. So I love this. Don't get me wrong. I am not complaining. But I am very curious. Why don't other truckers want to park in the first truck parking spot in rest areas? Is there some sort of taboo or unwritten rule against parking in the first truck parking spot in a rest area?
Is it taboo to park in the first truck spot at a rest area?

That has been known as the welcome spot since the 70s. As a courtesy you should blink your lights at any truck that pulls in to welcome them.

Since there is not a painted line on the left side it might not be considered a parking spot at all, but part of the roadway.

Because sometimes it’s not a designated parking spot and it’s considered a travel lane.

For me it would depend on the pavement markings. In the first pic I wouldn’t park in the first spot because it’s obviously not a designated parking spot. In the second pic I would park in the first spot just because of the lack of pavement markings.
