Try yard operations at a scrap yard.
I just got on with a major metal recycling yard in edmonton. I dont even leave the yard. I run a tandem axle roll off moving bins around the yard and dumping them, run a shunt truck to spot trailers/seacans as needed.
It's not terrible work, I kinda miss being regional running to Ft Mac, but that was Wednesday to Sunday and nights. The new job is Monday to Friday and 6 hours every second Saturday (which is o/t). O/t after 8 hours a day.
They have a hard time keeping guys or even getting decent applicants. Id applied for a different position and they offered me this job which wasn't even posted.
Must have similar yards in Calgary.
Is it time to haul fuel?

Yea, they've gotten worse. Sunbelt pretty much has all the fuel contracts, for the excavation companies I contract too, that can't be covered by their in house fuel trucks. So 4 Refuel was the worst, and somehow after Finning sold them it got even worse. I don't see them at all in the area's of construction I'm present, for at least a month now.

Try becoming a city owner op at transx for 42.50$ hour. Plates and insurance paid. Top fuel discount. Local city truckloads
no handbombing -
You'd probably make more as a first year apprentice in just about any trade.
Albertaflatbed and BigHossVolvo Thank this. -
I almost make that company in Truck and Pup, the LTL company I left, paid $65/hr for day cabs.Albertaflatbed Thanks this.

My nephew just got laid off when the heavy haul oversize company hee worked for seven years folded .
When they worked he made average of $850 a day , but the last year or two he’s work a week and be off two or three weeks just getting their minimum $500 per week pay .
was hauling a 16 wide $50 million cargo or a 12 wide 60,000 lb cargo .
Occasionally hauled a 14 tall $ 850 million cargo .
he’s 26 and fit , and is looking at trying to get on with a fire department or driving a dumpster trash front loader at $30/hr with OT after 40 and double time after 60 .
Lots of experienced taken getting run out of the business by the turbans .BigHossVolvo and Albertaflatbed Thank this. -
That is one thing holding me back from applying for more Dz jobs like roll off . If you stick to it for anything more then 6 months all that Az experience you had doesn’t mean anything to a lot of companies . You have to start all over again, unless you find a small mom and pop company that doesn’t care
the thing is i see way more Dz type jobs pay a lot more then local az driving jobs . so if you landed a good paying dz job do you even care at that point.
Also with you saying no one is hiring and has a lot of resumes on the ready is one reason i’m not even looking for a new job at this point in trucking . if it doesn’t work out at a new company and say they let you go . you might be screwed because no one is really hiring
I hate to say it you might be better off staying we’re you’re at for now and hopefully this tariff deal gets resolved and the economy gets back on track soon . hopefully by then companies start hiring again and then look for a new job . or get out all together like i’ve been thinking about doingLast edited: Sep 25, 2025

You heard of jepson petroleum? Or jpal

Yes, they have a yard really close to me on 84th St NE. I believe the last time I looked into them, the guy offered me $24/hr, benefits, store discount and they provide the coveralls/washing. Seemed like a nice outfit tho, way better than 4 Refuel.
I got just offered $45/hr to start $48hr after 3 months, running one of the excavation companies fuel trucks. Pretty tempting, except its mandatory 6 days a week (75-80hrs), and you don't go home until its done. Nice plan B tho. -
Or Dennis dirtworx...I'm sure you seen em around. They just appeared out of nowhere a few years ago..
But they're not out of Calgary
