Not furloughed yet actually. Just seeing what’s coming. I’m very bottom of the seniority list and I was hired during record travel in the industry. Not only does it need to come back, but it needs to come back SPECTACULARLY for me to be needed.

Eventually it will, but I’ve been looking for a way out of aviation for awhile. I don’t enjoy it.

If I’m at a job where I’m home every night (heck most nights will do), got my debt paid off, and am happy doing what I’m doing there’s no reason for me to go back once I’m recalled. I would be turning down insane money but I don’t want insane money, I want enough money and peace of mind.

If however, the airline recalls me before I can make something happen with this new path, then I will have to go back because it will be my quickest path to what I want.

My money is on a 2-3 year furlough at best.

Home at night. Debt free. These are the only two things that I care about.

One thing I am not sure you understand about our industry , is that our hourly pay is miserable. We make up for this by working very long hours. If you are going to be local and making 90k a year, you are only going to be home long enough to sleep and shower.
I enjoy this kind of work because I do not work year round. When I am a trucker, I am only a trucker. You are never really a guy with hobbies or a social life of any kind. You are not the same kind of person as a guy with a 40 hour work week.
Since this is the case, I feel its better to be over the road and not pay for housing. You can actually get a bit more time to relax on the road because there is no commute . When you wake up you are already at your workplace.
Trucking no matter what part you get into , is not a normal job at all.

I mean this with absolutely no disrespect to the OP but, to quote my Dad who had every license there was, "there's nothing more useless than a pilot if there's nothing to fly."
The airlines are suffering right now and cutting labor costs is one way for them to delay the inevitable collapse or takeover by another line.
An airline pilot's job isn't what it used to be. Kinda like trucking, no?

No offense taken as it’s hilariously true. What’s even more sad is a lot of pilots think there are 60k a year office jobs just laying around waiting to rescue them during a furlough.

Yeah, it's a rough deal. I have no idea what it costs now to start from O time and get the ATP but I'd hate to be doing it. The job stability just isn't there and I don't think it will ever be again.
Look at the last twenty or so years with all the mergers and bankruptcies.
I had an uncle who flew for Braniff. He'd just finished 747 ground school when they folded up. There just weren't any jobs then and he wound up flying a Beech 18 hauling freight at night for lousy wages. He wound up going back to school for his A&P and never did really make the mental adjustment from flying them to fixing them.

Good ol braniff. So far my career has had 2008 financial crisis which made hiring horrible and regional wages literal food stamp wages until about 2015. Now this. It’s a bummer but I have no love for flying jets anyways. It’s just a really good job that’s been yanked out from under me for reasons totally beyond anyone’s control so I’m doin something about it.

So far I’m really enjoying class.

Btw just want to thank everyone for their help I creeped on here for a few weeks before making an account and it was obvious to me that this forum has a lot of good people on it who would be brutally honest about the industry!

Put in a year or two and become the captain of your own truck, you'll be happy you did.
