Don't drive a CMV alone to test. Depending on the state, they will either fail you completely right there, or even have an officer come and give you tickets for driving a CMV without a license.
What type of vehicle are you planning on testing in anyway? -
It's possible. Schneider hired me right our of CDL school into a part time job. I drive weekends out and back on a dedicated account. Go out Saturday, get back Sunday night.
Zoltan1a and Bigtruckdrver504 Thank this. -
This Friday is the knowledge written test. If I pass, I go back for the skills a driving test in which I will make sure someone with a CDL comes with me to drive.
I was planning on getting a family member rent a truck from Ryder or get a school bus or something for the driver test.
I'm in Louisiana -
I’ve driven part time for 22 yrs. It’s as needed. I live near a port so it’s containers, all runs are out and back. I let them know I’m available and if they have work I slip seat (which sux), but i have done/ do it, and it works.
Bigtruckdrver504 Thanks this. -
I think you're gonna need something bigger than a school bus.
-
I'll ask them when I get there Friday , worse case I'll rent a semi from Ryder
-
School bus definitely won't work. You should give Ryder a call to see what their requirements are. It's not like getting a Uhaul. I've heard it's a $10k deposit and you'll likely need your own insurance.
201 and Bigtruckdrver504 Thank this. -
Ryder, penske, well everyone doesn't rent out cmvs to random people. Heck a lot of times they don't even rent out to a company's unless they've been in business for multiple years.
Your best bet is to contact driving schools in your area, and see if you can rent a ride from them for the test. Make sure it's a manual transmission because that's a restriction.
That said you have only until February 22, although I could be wrong on the day, to get the full test done including the driving test. After that time you will have to go to a school to get your cdl. That's federal law that's just now being implemented. -
Thanks, that's good to know. I believe I'll figure it out so I can have one available. I've heard of people using school buses near me though but I'll double check.
If I understand the fmsca correctly, if you have a CLP, by Feb 7 2022, you are grandfathered in but you have to obtain the CDL before the CLP expires which is 180 days from issuance.
