Except for when I was going through school and training, I have never been out more than 6 weeks myself. -
Stevens calculates the number of loads it can average out of Florida and calculates the number of drivers it can support from the area. (they do that for other 'challanged' areas such as Michigan, N Dakota etc). There is a constant turnover so the number of students from the area is determined by 'openings'.

When you start your trucking career, you will likely go OTR. If not Stevens, then another company. Ignore what the recruiters tell you. You'll get much more accurate and truthful information from a forum like this than you will from a recruiter.
You'll get the good and the bad.
If you go OTR, I can virtually guarantee you that you'll be out 6 weeks or more at a time to begin with. As you accumulate time, you'll learn how to shorten that interval.
I tell new drivers the same thing: Put it on the qualcom. If it wasn't written down, it was never said.
Starting two weeks before you're due to be home, start reminding you DM you are due of home time. Name a specific date. Put in on the QC every two or three days. Then starting a week before you're due to be home, start putting it on every morning. "Remember. I'm due for hometime in <name city> on October 3".
If it's on the QC, they'll get you home. It may vary a couple days one way or another, but they'll get you home.
I can't speak for other comanies, but if they fail (grossly) and it was on the QC...they lose a big chunk of their posterier. They may not care about your butt, but they certainly care about theirs! -
