Why is it this is always discussed in terms of driver shortage, and not in terms of freight availability?
There is much more to what drives freight rates and hiring rates. There are 3 types of carriers ... small and independents, mid-sized, and "megas". Between them, there is more then enough capacity to meet America's truck availability needs, as they fluctuate. One can capitalize when national truckloads decrease, and one can capitalize when national truckloads increase. Point is, it's a very convoluted dynamic, BUT, there is and always has been [the last 15 years] more then enough power capacity to cover needs + 20% "imaginary overload" capacity that never has materialized and probably never will.
There is nothing to indicate any big boost in US output coming around the corner. -
Bingo!!!

That's not even counting the people that get into this then screw up big time. Fatalities, drug use, DUI's. Good way to make sure you never get hired again.
Not that I'd work there, but I'm getting tired of the McDonald's cliché. They don't pay minimum anymore, in fact I've seen a few that offer pretty decent rates (entry rates at that!) in fact there was a time I could legitimately argue I made less with a CDL than I could at a local McDonald's. (Assuming I could get 40 hrs. /wk. which is often not the case.)
