there will always be trucking but it may not look like it does now. Heck it doesn;t look now like it did 10 years ago. All I used to do was coast to coast. That is nearly dead now. I see regional and local as the future but that aso depends on trucks. Tip says trucks are gone with fuel prices I say trucks will evolve to be for fuel efficient. I know there is already research into diesel electric hybrid trucks.
As for the health thing... In my experience drivers get t where they can't pass there physicals BECAUSE of truck driving. So someone with a normal lifestyle at 50 isn't the same as someone 5 who has driven trucks for 30+ years.

That could happen, sure. Trucks may start running on Wesson. But I think the elites want fewer trucks. Fewer trucks idling in truck stops, fewer trucks contributing to traffic jams, and fewer trucks contributing to accidents. Many states have allowed their transport infrastructure to suffer a bit because, I would guess, it is impossible to tell if the number of rigs on the roads is going to increase or decrease. My guess is it will decrease. Boosh and chain-me have already come out and said the US will consume something like 20 million fewer gallons of fuel per year by around 2012. Diesel is in that total. I've already covered the moves Warren Buffet has recently made. He wouldn't invest all that money that doesn't belong to him in the railroads if he didn't know something was going to become of it. And places like California are putting tighter and tighter enviornmental restrictions on trucks. I've heard CAT is even getting out of the class 8 market.

Taken together, I'd say there are people in the world who know what the future will bring to OTR truck driving, and they all, in their tight lips, are screaming "fewer trucks".
