I'm thinking about buying my first truck. It seems no matter what brand an engine is, it has some sort of "typical problem."
I read about Cummins and the problems with EGR valves.
I read about CAT's and problems with their head or injectors.
Detroit Diesel this.... Mercedes Benz that.... Paccar this.... Maxx Force that .... Mack MP series this.... Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah...
So my question is, Is there any brand engine out there that has almost NO "typical problems?" If so, then I'll know what engine to look for when I buy my first truck.
Thanks!
Is there any engine out there that DOESN'T have problems?

I don't know, but I can tell you more horror stories from my experiences combined with what the mechanics said.
Cummins M-11. Harmonic Balancers like to fall off.
Cummins N-14. Have leaking o-rings near the little horseshoe tubing on top of the motor that sometimes results in fire and total loss of truck.
Detroit 12.7 60 series. Bull gear failure and depending on when and how it fails can result in complete destruction of engine.
Cat C-15 have had deck or head problems that have resulted in gasket failure.
That's all I can tell you based on personal experience combined with a mechanic that tells me it's typical of the engine. Sorry that it's not the answer you were looking for, but the reverse of it. Good luck.
P.S. Big fan of the Duc's. My best friend had a 998 and a MV Agusta F4 and I like the Duc much better. Sure the MV is sexy as hell, and throwing out 160hp at the wheel, but that V-twin is great for early roll on's out of corner. Not that I'm some kinda racer dude, but skilled enough to appreciate a good handling bike or car. -
If it has boobs or wheels it has problems...
delta5, RERM, Ezrider_48501 and 4 others Thank this. -
Did you hear anything about Volvo's?
I like to know since I got one.. -
No, never was and never will.

Sure my ford escorts 4 banger never has problems because I never drive it. If you don't drive it ever and it never moves then you won't have problems.
Also in other news. At my dads company anytime something brakes his boss likes to joke and say driver abuse. If you hadn't been driving the truck it would have never broke. To which the drivers all ways reply ok then I won't drive it next week so we won't have to worry about it. Boss man all ways is like no no no don't do that we sorta have to deliver the products. They deliver kidney dialysis fluid to clinics across the country. If they don't deliver people will die if they don't get thier treatments. -
Best to stay away from the EGR engines IMO

They all have their share of problems. The best way to do this is buy a truck that has warranty left on it. The other option is to have $25,000 in reserve for engine troubles.
Try not to buy trucks used by big companies. They tend to change oil way past the manufacturer recomended interval.
That's just my .02delta5 Thanks this. -
I'm not sure its that or just that if there was money left to be made in that truck the company would keep it. The reason they're selling that truck is because its no longer profitable...
I've heard of a lot of companies that maintain their vehicles very well... and they run them until you can't run them anymore. -
