You have to choose to be happy, or bring your own happiness with you. From listening to a very good radio program (The Dennis Prager Show www.pragertopia.com) I've learned that grumpy people, like me, think happy people are people with fewer problems or an easier life than I have. It's not true. Happy people are people that don't internalize the bad things that happen and they understand life's bumps in a healthier way.

The world, and the people doing most things that make life harder for us, aren't setting out to make things hard on you, personally, they don't even know you exist. But grumpy people like me see the bumps a lot more like a personal insult or character flaw.

One of Dennis Prager's wise sayings he learned from a friend's mom is: "the only happy people I know are people I don't know very well." Some people we think are happy are just failing to disclose all of their pain to us. Others like me, let the world know when we have found a shortcoming, no matter how hard we have to look to find that shortcoming. The most freedom we have is the freedom to react as we decide. Growing up means not just behaving with our initial and emotional reaction, but putting events in context and choosing a reaction that does the most good for us.

Like everything in life, it's easier to say than to do.

Amen Brother. I too am like you about how I handle things and trying to change it. I can give the best wise advice. Probably because I know all too well how stupid I react. If only I could learn to follow it. I am improving slowly.

Hell, I'm just happy to wake up at all! Considering all I've had happen over the past few years, I probably shouldn't even be here now. :biggrin_2558:
